Membrane-based water electrolysis (WE) is considered as the best up-and-coming technology to produce high-purity hydrogen with relatively high efficiency (~70 %) from renewable energy resources. The prevailing trend in WE technology involves using thinner membranes to enhance cell performance by reducing cell resistance and minimizing material and production costs.

Nevertheless, it's important to recognize that thinner membranes are more prone to increased gas crossover, raising concerns about hydrogen safety, membrane durability, and cell efficiency.

To address this significant technical challenge specific to membranes used in WEs, our project objective is to resolve the conflict between gas crossover and membrane thickness (resistance). More importantly, we aim to identify a viable pathway for developing cost-effective yet high-performing membranes in WE.

**Education**:
Ph.D. in Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering, Polymer, Material Science, or Electrochemistry.

**Experience**:

- Experience in polymer or membrane materials.
- Experience contributing to collaborative research efforts.

**Who is eligible?**:

- Fellowships will be for two years contingent on satisfactory progress achieved during the first year.
- Fellows will work in a lab under the direct supervision of an NRC researcher.

In addition, applicants who best meet the requirements of the position will be asked to provide three letters of recommendation at a later stage of the competition process.

**Compensation**:
The intent of this hiring action is to staff through the Postdoctoral Fellowships Program at the AsRO level, which is an early-career level position with a salary range of $74,230 to $103,093.
