Job Summary

The Director of the UBC Core Facility for Neurology Biomarker Innovation (CFNBI;

) will be responsible for providing strategic oversight and management in all areas of core facility development and administration, including: strategic plan development and implementation, human resources, grant development, engagement with internal and external collaborators, partners and stakeholders, resource allocation, and project management.

The CFNBI leverages the success of Dr. Cheryl Wellington’s biomarker research program at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health, which has published 30 papers, attracted >$57M in operating funding to support >40 projects, served >100 local, national and international academic, industry and government partners, and employed 24 trainees and staff since its initiation in 2016. Following a recently approved Canada Foundation for Innovation John R. Evans Leaders Research Fund award to enable the CFNBI to operate independently of Wellington’s laboratory, renovations at UBC Hospital will create a dedicated 1393 ft2 space for CFNBI dry and wet lab research and educational and knowledge mobilization activities. The Director will play a lead role in setting the strategic direction and development of the CFNBI, further enabling the CFNBI to become a go-to site in Canada for neurology biomarker research.

The CFNBI uses state-of-the-art technologies to detect a wide variety of protein biomarkers in blood and cerebrospinal fluid. These biomarkers, which reflect the complex dynamics of brain physiology, are under intense investigation as research tools and have considerable potential for clinical use to assist in screening, diagnosis, prognosis, and management of neurological disorders, including key roles in clinical trial design. The CFNBI works collaboratively with clinicians and researchers at local, national and international levels, studying various aspects of neurological health and disease, including: acute trauma (e.g., traumatic or hypoxic brain injury, spinal cord injury), neurodegeneration (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, multiple sclerosis), the neurological impact of COVID-19, and healthy aging. The Director will work directly with local, national and international collaborators to offer scientific expertise and to provide project leadership on behalf of the facility.

Organizational Status
The Director will report to Dr. Cheryl Wellington (Academic Lead). This position will manage and supervise all staff and trainees working within the facility, including management and professional staff, research associates, coordinators, assistants, students, and volunteers. The Director is a key representative for the CFNBI. The individual will represent the CFNBI in interactions with stakeholders including but not limited to BC’s Health Authorities, Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services, granting agencies, and collaborative research partners. The nature of the work requires independent action and judgment. Decision making will be done independently or in consultation with the Academic Lead and other members of the CFNBI Governance Committee.
