Environmental Stewardship Technician

Stz’uminus First Nation is seeking **3** full-time term Summer Environmental Stewardship Technicians.
These positions will run from **May 2023 to August 2023**, with the opportunity to become part-time positions for **September 2023 to March 2024**.
The technicians will work to increase Stz’uminus’ understanding of cumulative effects within their traditional territory. Technicians will be a part of studies to understand the current environmental conditions and then work to improve them.
**Hours of Work & Salary Range**:
These are term positions. The Environmental Stewardship Technicians will work 37.5 hours per week, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Salary Range: $18.00 - $24.00 per hour.
**Essential Duties**:
- The listed duties are illustrative and are not intended to describe every function this position may perform.
- Support the Salish Sea Initiative Coordinator in fulfilling funding agreement goals and objectives for stewardship work.
- Collect samples (water, clams) and data for research studies.
- Record observations from samples and sites accurately and neatly.
- Create reports based on sampling and observation records.
- Identify and locate environmental features on work sites.
- Report on monitoring activities.
- Assist with operating and maintaining equipment, including laboratory, field, and monitoring equipment.
- Communicate effectively with project team members.
- Undertake restoration activities such as invasive species removal, native plantings, litter clean-up, and shoreline monitoring as required.
- Undertake the training provided for safely conducting fieldwork and learn environmental technician skills.
- Gain skills needed to build a career in the environmental sector.
**Job Specification Requirements**:
- Ability to work with other staff, consultants, contractors, and other service providers respectfully and professionally.
- Practical communication skills, both verbal and in writing.
- Ability to proficiently use Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and handle shifting priorities to produce results within deadlines.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- An enthusiastic attitude and willingness to learn.
- The ability to work with little supervision.
- Valid BC Driver’s License.
- Criminal Record Check.
- Grade 12.
**Job Specification Preferences**:
- Strong understanding of Indigenous history and politics in British Columbia; cultural competency and knowledge of Stz’uminus cultural traditions and interests.
- Experience collecting water samples and using laboratory equipment (e.g., microscope).
- Experience working on and around water. Boat operation certificates and experience are preferred.
- Experience maintaining and operating scientific equipment.
- Experience with drones and remotely operated vehicles.
- Level 1 First Aid considered an asset.
- Familiarity with marine ecosystems.
- Experience with shellfish (harvesting, sampling, identification).
- Experience using GIS.
**Salary**: $18.00-$24.00 per hour
