**How will you contribute?**

The Principal Clerk is a senior management position in the Senate Administration providing managerial direction and strategic planning needed for the delivery of the Legislative Sector’s specialized functions and procedural services. The incumbent is expected to rotate among the services of the Procedural Sector over the course of a career.

The individual is responsible for providing and overseeing a wide range of non-partisan services provided directly to the Speaker, other senators and parliamentarians, the Clerk, and other executives, directors and personnel in senators’ offices and the Senate Administration to support operational requirements that allow senators and the Senate to conduct parliamentary business, in particular with respect to the legislative process and fulfilling parliamentary diplomacy obligations.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

- Manage professional staff and support personnel in the Chamber Operations and Procedure Office (Table Research or Chamber Services), the Committees Directorate, and the International and Interparliamentary Affairs Directorate;
Support and provide strategic advice for assigned directorate, the Clerk and colleagues, and participate in cross-directorate initiatives;
- Provide direction and advice to personnel on the correct policies and processes to follow for a range of administrative purposes and situations;
- Oversee the operational needs, training and mentoring of personnel, and ensure the delivery of a superior level of non-partisan service to parliamentarians, ambassadors and other senior officials;
- Coordinate major research projects, including writing and updating of the procedural reference works;
- Serve as a Table Officer, provide advice on parliamentary procedure and contribute to the proper functioning of the Senate Table;
- Assist the Speaker, senators in leadership positions and all parliamentarians in co-ordinating anticipated business during Senate sittings, committee meetings, or association or diplomatic meetings;
- Oversee, review and approve official documents required for sittings of the Senate, committee meetings and association meetings and ensure accuracy of public information on the Senate of Canada website;
- Manage the human, financial and materiel resources for a team, and support their professional development;
- Participate in public outreach, presentations and conferences on behalf of the Senate.

The general public to staff one (1) determinate full-time position and future temporary and/or permanent full-time positions in the Legislative Sector (Chamber Services, Table Research, Committees, International and Interparliamentary Affairs or the Office of the Clerk of the Senate).

**Prerequisites**
- Successful completion of a university degree;
- Significant experience, usually developed over a period of several years, providing expert non partisan advice on the legislative process, chamber proceedings and committee business to senior stakeholders in a political context;
- Experience in research and analysis of complex issues;
- Demonstrated leadership skills with significant experience managing, developing and motivating a diverse group of employees;
- Experience in financial management including the management of a budget;
- Knowledge of the Senate and its constitutional role, of the Acts and Regulations under which it operates, its internal policies, and its practices and procedures, including the Rules of the Senate and parliamentary authorities;
- Capacity to oversee and direct complex operations and initiatives to support high-profile and politically sensitive international/interparliamentary activities and events;
