Barrie Fire and Emergency Service (BFES) is a team of dedicated professionals delivering a vast array of emergency services to the citizens, business and visitors to Barrie. Originally organized in 1844, BFES has become one of the most respected fire services in Ontario, providing high-level service in: fire inspection/code enforcement, fire protection, technical rescue, training, communications, origin and cause investigations, and emergency management planning.

**The Opportunity**

Under the direction of the Chief Fire Prevention Officer, the Fire Inspector, having the authority of Fire Protection and Prevention Act (FPPA) and its regulations conducts inspections and enforces the FPPA, in response to complaints and requests and where legislated. Specifically, this position provides advice, including writing reports and preparing documents for administration, conducts annual inspections, witnesses, and assesses fire drills in vulnerable occupancies in compliance with FPPA, and reports directly to the Fire Marshal’s Office. Additionally, the position assumes responsibility for fire safety plan reviews, as delegated by the Fire Chief. Overall, this position plays an integral role in ensuring the safety of the residents and customers of the City of Barrie.

**Education **(degree/diploma/certifications)
- Secondary School Diploma
- Completion of Ontario Certification of the NFPA 1031 curriculum from the Ontario Fire College, which includes:

- NFPA 1031 - Fire Inspector I, NFPA 472 awareness, Fire Code Part 2 and 6, Fire Code Part 9,Courtroom Procedures and Legislation
- NFPA 1035 - Fire and Life Safety Educator I

**Knowledge/Skill/Ability**
- General knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, or requirements:

- Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
- Ontario Highway Traffic Act
- Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)
- Ontario Human Rights Code
- Workplace Safety Insurance Act
- Electrical Safety Authority (ESA)
- Technical Safety and Standards Association (TSSA)
- Office of the Fire Marshal Guidelines
- Fire Marshal’s Directives
- Fire Protection and Prevention Act and its Regulations (FPPA)
- Basic knowledge of the technical aspects of alarm, detection and voice communication systems, elevators, sprinkler systems, fire pumps, water supplies, hazardous materials, smoke management systems, emergency electrical power and other factors related to fire protection.

- Intermediate computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and the Internet.

**Conditions of Employment**
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing
- Standard First Aid, CPR Level C, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certifications
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check* and a Vulnerable Sector Check

**Other Important Information**

**Location**:Barrie Fire and Emergency Services, Station 1, 155 Dunlop Street West, Barrie, Ontario

**Hours**:The normal hours of work will be an average of forty-two (42) hours per week, in accordance with the following repeating schedule: a day shift of ten and one half (10.5) hours per day, 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for four (4) consecutive days, Monday to Friday, followed by three (3) consecutive days off duty.

**Wage**:This position is within the BPFFA Bargaining Unit with the following a 2023 pay range:

- _Yearly Salary:_ _$64,984 per year and in accordance with the BPFFA Collective Agreement
- _Hourly Pay Rate:_ _$29.65 per hour and in accordance with the BPFFA Collective Agreement
