The Public Health Division provides strategic direction and leadership through the assessment, development and implementation of provincial policies, regulations, strategies, and standards in the areas of communicable diseases, immunization, compliance monitoring, environmental public health, health promotion, and emergency preparedness, response and recovery.

The division carries out these functions to support innovation and engagement with Albertans in wellness, health promotion, harm reduction, as well as injury and disease prevention. To support health system quality, the division collaborates with partners in compliance and monitoring activities and enforcement of the acts, regulations and standards administered by the division regarding physician billing, continuing care accommodations and health services, infection prevention and control, and protection for persons in care.

The Health Protection Branch oversees, leads and supports the development, implementation and review of legislation, standards, guidelines and policies to protect public health. Health Protection staff follow current issues/trends and support research into emerging and existing environmental and infection control and infectious disease public health concerns (e.g., climate change, air borne contaminants, hospital and community acquired infections) to understand these issues and the impacts they may have for public health. The Branch also coordinates the emergency planning and response efforts of the health sector for the department for emergency events (e.g., pandemic influenza, business disruptions and flood).

**Role**:
Reporting to the Director, Public Health Standards and Regulations (PHSAR), this position is responsible for leading and developing complex strategies and policies related to health protection initiatives (including infection prevention and control, food safety initiatives, enteric and zoonotic outbreaks), developing policy, legislation and regulations for public health initiatives in Alberta and leading the revision of regulations under the Public Health Act and the Skin Cancer Prevention (Artificial Tanning) Act. In addition, this position plays an important role in representing Alberta Health on cross-ministry and national initiatives. This position maintains strong linkages with Alberta Health Services, GOA ministries, health professional regulatory colleges and other external stakeholders

**Qualifications**:
University graduation in a field related (e.g. Public Administration/ Science) to the position assignment, supplemented by four to six years related experience.

**Experience**:

- Experience in developing robust strategic policy and providing program advice
- Experience in contributing to the planning, implementation and evaluation of health protection strategies and initiatives
- Experience in leading the review and development of legislation and regulations related to environmental public health
- Experience in leading and directing a team of highly specialized professional staff
- Experience in collaborating and communicating with stakeholders
- Experience in implementing operational policies and systems
- Experience in supporting the development and implementation of diverse health strategies, initiatives, policies and programs in a dynamic and changing environment
