**Job Summary**
Responsible for providing specialized, highly advanced, professional engineering services in a nuclear engineering field to design, develop and coordinate reactor operation, maintenance or research and contract projects. Provides significant technical depth and expertise. Provides leadership and ongoing administration for research projects and commercial contracts.
**Purpose and Key Functions**:
- Design, fabricate, and assemble equipment and instruments that require the identification, modification and adaptation of novel engineering techniques.
- Authorize individual experiments for approved programs including scheduling irradiations and other services.
- Identify, analyze and solve new, unique, and complex problems as presented in research contracts and commercial projects.
- Provide advice in a specialized field to students, researchers, and industrial clients.
- Troubleshoot issues with nuclear and non-nuclear supporting systems and recommend corrective action.
- Complete equipment performance and reliability studies and recommend appropriate maintenance and replacement strategies.
- Conduct safety analysis for research contracts and licensing requirements.
- Provide leadership for a research project or commercial contract by determining priorities to achieve project goals, defining and coordinating resource needs, scheduling resources and setting schedules that will meet defined deadlines.
- Liaise and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders to secure time, space and related resources for projects and contracts.
- Conduct standardized reactor operational activities using specialized equipment within the nuclear suite of facilities and instruments.
- Write and maintain computer programs to support operations and safety analysis.
- Recommend and incorporate new approaches and methodologies in reactor operations or maintenance.
- Write sections of scientific reports and/or papers for inclusion in journal publications and contract reports.
- Format and summarize data and write technical reports in support of reactor operations.
- Develop and deliver technical presentations to engineering colleagues, industry and contract agencies.
- Provide supportive advice with reactor based situations to colleagues, users and students.
- Prepare samples for irradiation.
- Calculate sample irradiation times, dose rates and exposures from various radioactive sources.
- Provide estimates of time, resources, schedules and create customer proposals required for research and industrial contracts.
- Prepare and provide data on work performed to enable accurate billing of the project to outside customers.
- Collect, evaluate and analyze data.
- Exchanges technical and scientific information with others.
- Liaise with external clients, customers and project partners.
- Required to perform activities which require dexterity and precision including, but not limited to, the manual calibration of reactor equipment.
- Remain current with frequent advances in a technical field or reactor system.
**Supervision**:
- Ensure adherence to quality standards and procedures for short-term staff, students and volunteers.
- Provides functional guidance to others on an ongoing basis.
**Requirements**:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering in a relevant field of study.
- Requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
- Required to complete and maintain Reactor Operator Certification upon hire.
