**JOB DESCRIPTION**

**POSITION: Powerline Technician - **Lineperson - Journeyperson**

**WORK GROUP: Union**

**FUNCTION**:
This position will be responsible for constructing, maintaining and troubleshooting distribution lines and equipment which support a safe, healthy, and efficient work environment.

**ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP**:

- Reports to the Operations Supervisor or Foreman
- Directs or works in close cooperation with Apprentice Lineperson and Contractors

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Perform all work according to Infrastructure Health and Safety Association Electrical Utility Safety Rules and Safe Practice Guides, GPI Health and Safety Policy and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and ensure that all crew members assigned under his/her direction follow safety rules and good work practices;
- Install and maintain poles, structures, transformers, regulators, sectionalizers, capacitors, switches, reclosers and cutouts for power lines; install conductors and associated apparatus using single, three and multi circuit construction methods;
- Perform assigned capital and maintenance work, and installation, troubleshoot and restore electric power during emergencies;
- Perform regular on-call duties and are capable and expected to be called upon to work under emergency conditions during outages and storms;
- Organize and lead crews when called upon, fill in and write written reports as needed or required;
- Remove, trim and/or control tree brush to ensure continuous uninterrupted power and public safety;
- Analyse prints and sketches to determine safe operating practices/policies;
- Understand and operate motorized vehicles and equipment, such as radial boom derricks, aerial devices, tension-stringing equipment and portable generators, and perform MTO required pre-trip inspections and report on defects;
- Install, connect, troubleshoot and repair underground, overhead conductors to service customers. Terminating and splicing cables as needed or required. Locate underground plant and burn offs using locating instruments;
- Attend training as required to update and review knowledge;
- Install various types of metering equipment, including single-phase meters;
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance of facilities, vehicles, hydraulic tools and chainsaws;
- Carry out good housekeeping and fire prevention practices in the performance of work;
- Perform other duties as requested or required.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Qualified as a Journeyman Power Lineperson including successful completion of the MEARIE Powerline Technician Program or equivalent;
- Must be proficient in the use of all equipment associated with power lineperson trade;
- Must be able to perform work from work instruction specifications and standards and to interpret prints, sketches and diagrams;
- Must be able to meet the physical demands of the Lineperson position (outdoors, climbing, lifting, pulling and moving in and out of bucket);
- Ability to deal effectively and courteously with public and staff.

**EDUCATION REQUIRED**:

- Minimum of Grade 12 Secondary School Graduation diploma or equivalent
- Electrical Technician, Technologist, or Powerline Technician Diploma an asset

**LICENCES OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS**:

- Ontario College of Trades Certificate of Qualification as a 434A - Powerline Technician or equivalent (Red Seal) Effective Jan 2023;
- Certificate of Registration as Powerline Technician or equivalent;
- Valid Class DZ or AZ drivers license with a clean abstract;
- Valid fork lift certification an asset;
- Hoisting Engineer an asset.

**WORKING ENVIRONMENT**:

- Typical outdoor environment in all types of weather
- Warehouse environment with exposure to noise, vehicle exhaust, temperature variations, and dust
