Join the team at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo as a **Summer Camp** Team Lead** As a Summer Camp Team Lead, you will be responsible for assisting with the implementation of the summer camp program, focused on assisting the Supervisor and camp leaders in daily activities. End Date: August 23, 2024

Hours: 40 Hours/week

**What you will do**:

- Staff Assistance:

- Assist with developing and delivering training activities, sessions, tours, and team builders during the two weeks of staff training
- Deliver weekly orientation sessions to camp volunteers. Check-in with volunteers throughout the week and create and distribute weekly thank you cards.
- Assist with morning staff meetings as required and communication between camp staff and supervisor, manager, and other members of the education department.
- Assist camp leaders in the morning to gather materials, biofacts, and general items they’ll need for the day
- Be available via radio to assist camp leaders with any issues or situations that arise
- Provide camp leaders with support by running items to them, jumping into camp if extra hands are needed, liaising with other departments (Volunteer Resources, Guest Relations, Concessions, Animal Care) and communicating issues to the Supervisor, Conservation Education
- Be available to provide coverage for any camp group should the need arise
- Assist in building and maintaining team unity through team-builders and other activities
- Maintain a safe working environment for staff, patrons, and animals
- Comply with the organization’s health and safety program
- Program Development:

- Assist with the development of appropriate themes, topics, conservation, and educational content for camp programs
- Support development of camp programs that meet the goals, objectives, and mandates of the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo

Pre

- Provide information for parents booking their children-
- Provide information to call centre for camp salesManage database of evaluations from parents of participants-
- Manage staff evaluations of camp programs-
- Assist and coordinate camp clean-upParent and Camper Management- Assist parents with the correct placement of campers-
- Interact and troubleshoot with parents as required-
- Organization and troubleshooting of weekly sign-in procedure-
- Printing of weekly sign-in/out, contact, and medical lists-
- Assist staff with camper discipline as requiredBudget and Supplies:

- Assist in purchasing supplies and materials for camp programs as required
- Keep records of costs for supplies
- Maintain and care for company resources

**What you will bring**:

- Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Biological, or Environmental Studies or equivalent
- At least 2 years experience in natural history, zoology, biology, recreation/leisure and /or education
- Experience working with children/youth 5-14 years old; experience in a camp setting is preferred
- The ability to present information about nature and nature conservation in an entertaining and educational manner
- A background in any of the following is an additional asset: leading tours, storytelling, leading sing-a-longs, leading games and activities, and/or presenting zoo education programs
- A keen interest in natural history and conservation
- Excellent planning, administration, and communication skills
- Knowledge of the natural history of Alberta is an asset
- Knowledge related to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo and its collection is an asset
- Demonstrable engaging oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrable commitment to providing exceptional customer service

**Other Requirements**:
**Working Conditions**:

- Requires considerable on-grounds mobility where there are long periods of time spent on foot indoors and outdoors in all weather
- Pulling a wagon of educational resources on grounds to classrooms
- Some lifting may be required
- This seasonal position has very limited flexibility for multiple days off due to the condensed nature of the program
- The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is a no smoking environment including vaping.
