**JOB TITLE**: Accountant

**REPORTS TO**: President

**JOB SUMMARY**:
The accountant will report to the President and manage all financial transactions, from fixed payments and variable expenses to bank deposits and budgets.

Accountant responsibilities include auditing financial documents and procedures, reconciling bank statements and calculating tax payments and returns. To be successful in this role, you should have previous experience with bookkeeping, payroll and a flair for spotting numerical mistakes.

Ultimately, you will provide the Company with accurate quantitative information on financial position, liquidity and the cash flows of our business, while ensuring we’re compliant with all tax regulations.Daily and monthly accounting responsibilities will consist of preparing appropriate journal entries and accruals, posting of payables and receivables, review of cash disbursements, reconciling accounts, preparing financial and management reports for the President.

**KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**

**Accounting**:

- Tracking payments to internal and external stakeholders
- Preparing budget forecasts
- Processing tax payments and returns such as: HST, WSIB, Health Tax, Visas, Corporate Tax, Payroll Tax, Union Dues, and Other Pre-authorized Payment
- Input and Manage all accounting transactions
- Publish financial statements in time
- Handle monthly, quarterly and annual closings
- Reconcile Bank Statements Monthly and accounts payable and receivable
- Ensure timely bank payments
- Compute taxes and prepare tax returns
- Manage balance sheets and profit/loss statements
- Report on the company’s financial health and liquidity
- Audit financial transactions and documents
- Reinforce financial data confidentiality and conduct database backups when necessary
- Comply with financial policies and regulations
- Full cycle accounting
- Issue ROEs as applicable ensuring that accurate information is provided
- Set up new employees in the system ensuring that all required documentation is included.

**Payroll**
- Collecting weekly timesheets
- Calculating and update data with salary or wage adjustments
- Preparing employees’ compensation every week using payroll software
- Schedule bank payments or hand out paychecks directly to employees
- Distribute payment statements and gather signed receipts (digital or paper)
- Report on payroll expenses
- Ensure wages and tax withholdings comply with the legislation
- Enter new employees’ data (e.g. bank accounts and SIN) into internal databases
- Process attendance records and other documents (e.g. tax forms)
- Check payroll information for accuracy and ensure all relevant paperwork is in order
- Coordinate with HR about changes in payroll (e.g. terminations, new hires)
- Process other financial compensations or deductions (e.g. annual bonuses, severance pay, taxes, worker’s compensation)
- Produce reports to upper management upon request
- Answer questions about compensation, benefits, taxes and insurance deductions

**Occupational Health and Safety**:

- Report all incidents, accidents and/or hazards.
- Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) particularly the “Duties of Workers” as stated in Section 28.
- Comply with Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
- Comply with Health and Safety rules, policies and procedures of the company.

**Employee Relations**
- Communicate with administrative and management staff as required.
- Provide and/or participate in training as required.
- Comply with company rules, regulations and policies as stated in the Employee Relations Manual and/or Employee Handbook.

**Environmental**
- Adhere to environmental policies and procedures.
- Comply with company disposal/waste management program and recycling program

**Other duties as assigned**

MINIMUM EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field

JOB-RELATED EXPERIENCE: 4-7 years of full cycle accounting experience in the **Construction industry **and Proven work experience as a Payroll Officer, Payroll administrator or similar role

**KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS**
- Hands-on experience with accounting software specifically Jonas and QuickBooks
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Attention to detail, accuracy and organizational skills are required
- Ability to multitask and prioritize your workload
- Strong Excel skills including Vlookups and pivot tables
- Excellent knowledge of accounting regulations and procedures, including the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Experience with general ledger functions
- Strong math skills with an ability to spot numerical errors
- Good knowledge of employment legislation
- Time-management skills
- Ability to handle confidential information

**Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation**

One or more of the following, an asset:

- Additional certification (CPA or CMA) is a plus.
