Full-time 12-month contract
The Project Lawyer will act as a counsel and coordinator for the Clinic’s #AndMToo Project
Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic offers trauma-informed legal services and representation, counselling and multilingual interpretation, and drives system transformation to support women and gender diverse people who have experienced violence. Rooted in the foundations of intersectionality, innovation, and a client-centered approach, we foster the skills and resilience of the people we serve and amplify their voices to create individual and collective change.
We are seeking an experienced lawyer to lead the Clinic’s #AndMeToo Project that was created to support precariously employed women left out of the #MeToo movement. The #AndMeTooProject seeks to increase access to justice for precariously employed women who have experienced sexual assault or sexual harassment in their workplace. The Project is intended for women who are facing multiple forms of discrimination, who have come from underserved communities, and who have complex socio-economic and legal needs. The objective of the Project is to provide direct legal services to these women while also building the capacity of their service providers, including their legal representatives. The Clinic aims to do so by connecting with organizations who work with these women and by reaching out to the women in the spaces they may already access.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
All duties and responsibilities will be carried out in accordance with Barbra Schlifer Clinic's Mandate, Mission and Values Statements.
**PROJECT ACTIVITIES**
- Enhance the capacity of the Clinic to serve marginalised women who experience workplace harassment, on a sustainable basis
- Adjust the Clinic’s core services to accommodate the needs of women who access the Project
- Collaborate with our other services to provide a broad range of support
- Create service pathways for women to our core legal and counselling services
- Leverage existing partnerships to create service pathways to the Clinic and other relevant services for women from hidden, marginalised and underserved communities
- Provide resources in community spaces in a safe and accessible way, including in multi-lingual formats
- Coordinate the Project’s relationships with community members
- Develop resources and other educational materials that address barriers to services
- Build the capacity of direct service providers who may not be familiar with the dynamics of abuse, exclusion, and sexual and economic coercion for the target population
- Build capacity in the bar, ultimately creating greater awareness and competence in the needs of this population within the legal profession
- Organize educational seminars for women in their communities with the help of interpretation services here at the Clinic
**OTHER DUTIES**
- Disseminate information about the project to networks, organizations and communities at large
- Develop positive and collaborative relationships and maintain a healthy roster of pro bono lawyers
- Represent the Clinic at external networks, coalitions and meetings
- Attend team and all staff meetings
- Any other duties as assigned
**KEY RELATIONSHIPS**
- The Project Lawyer will report to and be supervised by the Executive Director or her designate
- This role supports and works collaboratively with the Executive Office team as well as other Clinic departments on an on-going basis
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- 1-2 years’ experience in the practice of law with specific expertise in feminist legal advocacy
- Ability to empathize and communicate well with clients in a non-judgmental manner
- Demonstrated ability to advocate strongly on behalf of clients and to engage in community development, public legal education, professional development and law reform on issues relevant to survivors of violence
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, time-management and problem-solving skills; written and oral communication skills
- Understanding of legal and social issues of violence against women consistent with a feminist, anti-oppression analysis
- Commitment to working cooperatively in a woman-positive, multi-disciplinary environment
- Understanding of Immigration issues and migrant rights in the context of Family law is an asset - Fluency in a language other than English an asset
