**About the role**

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a **Regular Full-Time Molecular Specialist **to join our dynamic Testing Operations team in** Brampton, Ontario**.

The Molecular Specialist is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by being the conduit between the genomics and molecular test development function and the process development and clinical testing functions. This role is the highest-level technical support position in the Testing laboratory and works with mínimal supervision under the general direction of the Director, Testing Operations, and the accountable Medical Officer.

You will be involved in various aspects of clinical molecular or genomics assay development projects, and will design, conduct, optimize, support validation and implementation, and troubleshoot highly sophisticated technical processes and clinical assays. In this role you will be considered an expert in your field and through independent means are expected to current with related technical and conceptual advances.

**Formula for success**

Leads technical molecular clinical assay and process development through close collaboration with medical partners and Testing Operations team members and leadership.
- Designs, conducts, analyses, and troubleshoots molecular assays, processes and workflows.
- Recommends and prepares molecular reagents as required to perform polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), and nucleic acid extraction.
- Participates in the development, optimization, validation and implementation of new, improved or existing clinical laboratory assays.

Communication
- Keeps detailed and accessible records of all experimental conditions procedures and results to ensure quality and regulatory compliance.
- Prepares or contributes to appropriate laboratory documentation including work instructions, forms.
- Develops or contributes to manuscript or grant development to support clinical work as appropriate.

Provide staff training for clinical molecular assays or processes.
- Provides technical and process instruction to laboratory staff within the scope of clinical assay development, validation and implementation.
- May provide presentations to clinical staff to enhance technical molecular understanding and development.
- May contribute to molecular training modules in the Learning Management System or through other delivery channels.

Performs other related duties as required.

**Desired education and skills**:

- Masters or Doctoral degree with specialization in an appropriate area (Genetics, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or Health Sciences disciplines) from a recognized academic institution is required.
- At least 7-10 years of relevant experience with clinical assay design, validation and implementation.
- Highly proficient computer skills for the analysis of complex data including familiarity or experience with:

- Excel
- Publicly available genome exploration tools and databases such as NCBI resources
- Basic knowledge of any statistical software or programming language (R, python, SAS) is an asset
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Expert-level experience with and understanding of clinical molecular biology theory, and assay design, validation and implementation into the clinical laboratory space
