Resident Attendant

**DESCRIPTION OF ROLE**:
The Resident Care Aide (Orderly) is responsible for carrying out tasks related to resident supervision, hygiene and well-being.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Make sure that residents are healthy, happy and comfortable and that their needs are met per the complex’s standards
- Establish a supportive relationship with the residents, including reassuring and listening to them
- Provide safe, high-quality and efficient care
- Follow up on the care services provided; read the logbook and the care book
- Identify the residents’ needs and answer their questions
- Earn the residents’ trust, approach them with a smile
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of various disorders (behavioural, psychological, physical)
- Identify and make note of any changes to residents’ behaviour, physical and psychological state, and report your observations to the nurse
- Adapt your communication style to the resident, make sure that the resident understands
- Offer support to the loved ones of residents coping with a loss of independence
- Respond to call button alerts or any other emergency situation
- Help residents get around inside the complex and accompany them outside the residence
- Install and maintain certain kinds of devices; and make sure that the equipment is accessible and works well
- Partially or fully bathe residents
- Visit sick residents
- Order resident prescriptions from the pharmacy and make sure prescriptions are renewed with the medication distribution service
- Prepare trays and distribute medications when needed
- If necessary, act as an intermediary with the family and/or various health care institutions
- Keep a list of residents’ emergency arrivals and departures
- Check resident attendance at mealtime and call/go to the apartment of any absent residents
- Prepare simple meals for sick residents who are unable to come to the dining room
- Keep the manager informed of any situations that involve health or administrative changes
- Record any unusual events that happen during your shift in the logbook
- Help the nurse prepare the residents for medical visits
- Help with the breakfast service
- Perform various housekeeping tasks in the common areas
- Take telephone calls from the front desk and pass along messages to the appropriate people
- Conduct a security check and make sure all doors leading outside are closed and locked

**REQUIREMENTS**:
- High school diploma
- DVS in Institutional and Home Care Assistance or a high school diploma combined with training from an accredited school
- 1 to 2 years of experience
- Familiar with residents’ rights laws
- Familiar with the characteristics of someone coping with a loss of independence
- Familiar with hygiene, sanitation and safety techniques
- Familiar with infection prevention techniques
- Familiar with safe patient handling principles and CPR
