Nature of the Position

Reporting to the Manager of Community Services and under the general supervision of the Parks Foreman, the Turf and Irrigation Technician carries out the day-to-day operation and maintenance of sports fields and irrigation systems utilizing accepted horticultural practices and industry standards.

Typical duties include inspecting and assessing sports fields and turf areas to identify problems and recommend and implement maintenance requirements. The Turf and Irrigation Technician will utilize their expertise in irrigation principles to design, install, inspect, operate and repair irrigation systems, adjust watering schedules in accordance with regional water usage guidelines and assist with forecasting water usage. Additional duties include the operation of turf maintenance equipment as well as general maintenance of walkways, parks, beach accesses, trails, gardens and other horticultural needs as required.

Essential Competencies
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with clean abstract
- Certified Irrigation Technician Level 2 (Irrigation Industry Assoc. of BC, or equivalent)
- Landscape Horticulturist Level 4 (successful completion of the BC industry Training Authority’s Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship common core level I to IV exams) or equivalent
- Cross Connection Certification, or ability to obtain within 6 months of start date
- Minimum five years related experience in the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of irrigation systems
- Minimum five years related experience in sports field and/or golf course turf grass maintenance
- Minimum five years related experience in landscape maintenance
- Knowledge of horticultural principles, practices, standards, and tools
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to operate the vehicles, light tractors, tools and equipment relating to irrigation and parks operations
- Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision with demonstrated initiative
- Ability to work collaboratively as an effective member of a team
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to think critically and find solutions to problems
- Effective written, verbal and interpersonal skills and the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy
- Demonstrated customer service skills

Working Conditions

This is a regular, full-time unionized position within the BCGEU. The hourly wage is Grid 9, $33.24 - $36.93 per hour plus a competitive benefits package. The hours of work are 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The District of Sechelt supports employment equity in accordance with the Human Rights Act of BC.
