Life Skills Worker

The Mustard Seed Edmonton is committed to help people who experienced homelessness transition toward and maintain sustainable and healthy lifestyles. The Relief Life Skills Worker provides relief to and reports to the Senior Manager of Property and Projects, and collaborates with the Housing Manager and Supervisor, and other Housing Support Staff, and residents. The Relief Life Skills Worker is a member of a team that provides support services for 20 high acuity persons and 85 moderate acuity persons experiencing multiple barriers in Supportive Housing settings. They provide unique support to individuals by modeling skills and coaching tenants to maintain their suites, with the goal of a maintaining a healthy living environment and achieving independence. Relief Life Skills Workers assist tenants, in their units, working with and prompting them, to clean and keep their unit sanitary and safe. The supportive housing sites function within a trauma informed, recovery and harm reduction model.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Ensure tidiness and professionalism in all aspects of daily work
- Work with staff and residents: model, assist and coach residents in maintaining a standard of cleanliness in units
- Clean units including walls, bathtub, vanity, sink, mirrors, toilet, sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors, disposing of trash and emptying trash receptacles, cleaning dishes and returning them to cabinets, decluttering fridge/cupboards, countertop cleaning
- Participate in all staff training (e.g. First Aid, SafeTALK, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention) and attend monthly general meetings and support meetings with supervisor
- Other duties, as required
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS**
- Previous janitorial experience
- A passion to be part of ending homelessness in Alberta
- Ability to work well with people with mental health and addiction barriers and other team members
- Organized, self-directed and proactive
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Knowledge of WHIMIS and OH&S standards an asset
- Ability to adhere to Health and Safety regulations
- Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, etc.)
**WORKING CONDITIONS**
- This is a relief casual position. Hours are typically Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day, no guaranteed hours but staff are expected to be available for a minimum of 24 hours a month. Shifts are often required at short notice.
- Moderate physical effort: position requires frequent manual labor including reaching, walking, standing, and lifting. Ability to lift 20 to 50lbs repeatedly and work a physically active job for 8 hours a day. Considerable periods of standing, walking, lifting, climbing stairs, indoors and outdoors.
- Moderate mental effort: periods of high-volume workload and interaction with vulnerable residents. Conflict resolution and organizational ability is required.
- Working alone onsite periodically required
