**Position Summary**

The purpose of this position is to provide counselling services, education and support services to individuals who have an addiction to drugs and alcohol as well as their families where available. An addiction counsellor will provide therapeutic services in a community setting. They will be expected to work closely and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team of other addiction counsellors. As well as with clients to engage them in the decision-making process and help them understand the benefits of assessment and accessing the appropriate level of care as indicated.

We are hiring for day/evening community-based treatment program. The program is to provide collaborative, inter-agency team-based and client-driven services to clients seeking support in decreasing their substance use or those who wish to quit entirely. The program guides clients through a harm reduction approach to addiction treatment.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
To provide therapeutic treatment services that will include:

- Conducting individual weekly sessions with an assigned primary group of clients.
- Conducting family meeting with client’s family where possible.
- Responsible to facilitate and lead goal setting groups, spirituality groups, anger management groups and any other groups as directed by the clinical director for programming.
- Maintain a client caseload and meet with primary caseload weekly and individually and help them develop skills to achieve their treatment goals.
- Adhering to client centered, eclectic counselling approach using best practices, Cognitive Behavioural Therapies, Motivational Interviewing and other preventative treatment modalities.
- To support clients with developing skills to accomplish and continue treatment goals through their participation in our day program.
- Maintain documentation/records of clients; to foster growth, self-esteem, honesty, responsibility and willingness to cooperate with peers and work a recovery program marked by specific short and long-term goals.
- To attend and contribute to all care plan and staff meetings.
- To supervise - at times - scheduled components of our life-skills program that includes chores or leisure activities.
- To communicate with appropriate staff members regarding client recovery.
- Provides counselling and support to individuals experiencing addictions.
- Provide drug and alcohol counselling and support to client’s families.
- Ensure legislation, policies, standards and guidelines are being followed.
- Maintain strict confidential guidelines regarding all clients, conversations and referrals.
- Provide community education and support as requested.
- Assist clients to meet all requirements of the program.
- Participate in interagency working committees when required.
- Perform other duties as required.

**Education**
- Post-secondary Degree or Diploma in Social Work (BSW, SSW, Diploma in Addictions Treaments).

**Experience**

2 - 3 years’ experience in the mental health and or addiction field and working alongside clients and their families in need of support.
- Student Placement with The Vitanova Foundation

**Knowledge**
- The causes and effects of drugs and alcohol, and addictions on individuals, families and communities.
- The impact of trauma and addiction on an individual addicted to substances especially women.
- Crisis management and the ability to deal with high-risk situations including prevention of suicide.
- Case management and confidential record keeping practices.
- Knowledge of the theory of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and the Stages of Change Model.
- Knowledge of all relevant legislation, policies and practices associated with Best Practices in Addiction.

**Skills**:
Strong communication, interpersonal skills, observation, listening, organization and time management skills.
- Strong understanding of women’s experiences through substance use recovery.
- Strong understanding of the links between violence, trauma, addictions and mental health concerns with a particular interest in women with children.
- Ability to communicate your knowledge, assessment of clients, thoughts and present ideas in a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to write clear and efficiently.
- Emergency response skills.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrate good decision making in dealing with safety issues and with aggressive and intoxicated clients, if required.
- Mediation and negotiation skills.
- Able to interact and communicate with others in a supportive and caring manner while building effective therapeutic relations.

**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent

**Salary**: $40,000.00-$48,000.00 per year
