**Position Summary**
Reporting to the Supervisor, Recreation Facilities, the Arena Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of recreation facilities for the City of Kingston.
Main duties of this position include ice installation, removal and maintenance; general building custodial and maintenance duties; monitor building, refrigeration and environmental systems. The Arena Operator will also address and respond to inquiries from the public and facility users, and will ensure compliance with health and safety requirements in all aspects of the work.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain the safe and efficient operation of recreation and leisure arena facilities.
Perform ice installation/removal and maintenance including operation of the ice maintenance equipment and the ice re-surfacer in accordance with established procedures/practices and health and safety procedures.
Perform arena maintenance including repairs to dasher boards, glass replacement, floor repairs and other general repairs.
Monitor refrigeration plant and building systems and record readings.
Patrol building to check for problems, safety hazards or improper operation of facility and equipment; Ensure corrective action and/or escalate issues as required.
Provide excellent customer service to all users/visitors to the arenas by answering questions, resolve issues and document incidents as required.
Perform monthly checks to emergency fire equipment to ensure safe operating parameters.
Complete ice line, logo and facility painting and repairs.
Place supply orders for approval.
Perform sports field turf maintenance.
Assist with mobile stage erection and tear down
Regularly monitor and clean facilities including arenas, change rooms, washrooms, viewing areas and foyers.
Provide facility monitoring/set-up/take-down services for special events and large-scale recreational programs such as public skating, trade shows, junior hockey games, carnivals, tournaments, shows, etc.
Perform winter maintenance duties such as snow removal, salting and sanding outdoor entrances and exits surrounding the facility.
Complete required incident/accident reports on the appropriate forms and submit to the Supervisor.
Use of hand tools and limited power tools for minor repairs.
Use of vehicles and equipment for various maintenance tasks.
Assist with marina operations and maintenance tasks including marina seasonal start up and shut down and dock repairs and maintenance.
Participate in department meetings, initiatives, and training activities.
Act in accordance with federal and provincial legislation as well as corporate and departmental policies and procedures. Demonstrate commitment to ensuring a respectful and safe workplace.
Other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications, Competencies**
High School (Grade 12) diploma or equivalent.
A minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a recreation facility operation environment including maintaining arenas, marinas, pools, community centres or sports fields.
Experience with the installation and maintenance of ice, including the operation of arena and cleaning equipment (e.g. ice edger, snow blower, floor scrubber) an asset.
First Aid and Automated Electronic Defibrillator certification must be obtained within sixty (60) days of employment at the employees’ expense.
Must possess and maintain a valid Class ‘G’ driver’s license with a satisfactory driver’s abstract of not more than 3 demerit points.
Must demonstrate corporate competencies: Customer Focus, Results Orientation, Integrity, and Teamwork.
**Skills, Abilities, Work Demands**
Ability to complete job related training.
Knowledge of MS Office an asset.
Ability to operate an ice re-surfacer; (Zamboni, Olympia) ice edger’s and whitewash unit.
Ability to operate other equipment and vehicles (tractor, golf cart, snowblower, lawn mower, vehicle with trailer etc.)
