As a Laboratory Scientist I (LSI), your discerning eye, analytical mind, and critical thinking skills help doctors, patients, and families get the information they need to identify, treat, and make decisions about genetic diseases or disorders. Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is currently seeking a LSI (Clinical Genetics Technologist) to join the Genetics and Genomics team at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH). As the LSI, you will provide technical expertise and perform both routine and specialized work processing patient samples for the Edmonton Molecular Genetics Laboratory. In this role, you will be performing and interpreting complex molecular testing for various genetic conditions using established diagnostic procedures on extracted DNA. Possessing previous experience and specialized skills in molecular testing techniques, you will be responsible for casework involving molecular testing, interpretation and variant analysis, including complex Next Generation Sequence cases. Working in a team environment, you will participate in the general operation of the lab as well as test method development and evaluation, supervision of lab support staff and will be involved in clinical laboratory accreditation. **Description**:
As a Laboratory Scientist I, you will perform work involving laboratory processes including research and development, test method implementation and change, routine testing as well as clinical trials. In addition, you will collect background information including literature reviews, analyze data, and prepare research proposals and summary reports.

**Required Qualifications**:
Completion of Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science.

**Additional Required Qualifications**:
A BSc in Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics or related field and Genetics Technology Graduate Advance Diploma (must be active or eligible for registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists). OR an equivalent 2 years of experience in an inherited disease molecular diagnostic laboratory. Current clinical laboratory experience and knowledge in these techniques is preferred, including but not limited to: DNA and RNA extractions, DNA Sanger sequencing, DNA NGS sequencing, PCR, repeat-primed PCR, real-time PCR, MLPA, genotyping, Southern blot hybridization. Bioinformatics experience such as BLAST, primer design, protein prediction analysis, splice site analysis and knowledge of Human Genome Variation Society (HGVS) sequence variant nomenclature is required. Must have proven interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to deal with conflicting and changing priorities, deadlines, and duties. Ability to work in a stressful environment and meet critical timelines while maintaining patient confidentiality. Attention to detail, aptitude and proficiency in manual and automated techniques is required. The ability to recognize testing/procedural anomalies and act appropriately to resolve these is required. Must have the ability to operate Windows, MS Office Applications, and be fluent in the English language (reading, writing and verbal). Ability to do advanced maintenance with mínimal supervision is an asset.
