Lawson Health Research Institute (Lawson) is one of Canada’s top ten health research institutes, and serves as the research institute of London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and St. Joseph’s Health Care London (St. Joseph’s). Lawson is ranked eighth in the country according to the 2020 edition of “Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals List” by Research Infosource. This strong position has been maintained by Lawson for the past seven years and keeps the institute within the top five for Ontario. The top 40 list analyzes hospital-based research institutes from across the country on several metrics, including total research income from the previous fiscal year. The ranking looks at funds received from all sources, including both internal and external, to support research at the organization. Lawson also holds top ranking for research intensity among the large tier institutions measured by research spending per researcher.

**Job Summary**:
**What the Role is**

Reporting to the Director, Grant Development & Research Administration, the Manager, Research Approvals & Contracts is accountable for the authorization of research requiring Lawson oversight. They adhere to compliance frameworks governing research and seeks to optimize the balance between risk and timely contract execution and research authorization. Leading the Research Approval and the Contract teams at Lawson, the Manager ensures robust research authorization processes, including through the Clinical Research Committee review of research impacts on hospital clinical service areas; and is responsible for all research-related contracts, setting contracting standards to appropriately manage research risks on behalf of Lawson. The Manager ensures continuous improvement of research approval and contracting processes to support our researchers and enhance Lawson’s attractiveness as a research partner for external funders.

The Manager, Research Approvals & Contracts directs, controls and evaluates the delivery of department services. They are responsible for translating decisions of the program leadership into execution, by utilizing relationship management and working with internal and external stakeholders to achieve the necessary outcomes. The Manager ensures their team and department operations are aligned with our mission, vision and values, while working together to successfully achieve our strategic objectives.

This role is accountable for day-to-day department activities, including the management of human and material resources, day-to-day staffing and scheduling, development and support of a healthy workplace, risk and utilization measurements, and facilitation of improvement initiatives and change management, while operating within approved operational budgets and financial guidelines and controls. A major focus of the role is fostering effective working relationships and networks within the team/unit and with other teams across the organization, and has significant inter-dependencies with Western University, the academic institution with which Lawson is affiliated.
