Process Control Network Specialist

The Staff Process Control Network (PCN) Specialist is responsible for management of Shell Scotford’s Process Control Domain (PCD) Integrity work process. This includes ensuring that the Scotford site complies with Shell’s Risk Profile in the 5 PCD activities of “Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover.” The PCN Specialist will also work closely with the System Specialists in the hands-on technical support and maintenance for digital systems, computer and electronic systems, and communications systems within the site, including (but not limited to.) DCS Systems, SIS systems, Programmable Logic Controllers, Hardwired and Fiber Optic Networks and switches, Alarm Systems, Tank Gauging Systems, Vibration Monitoring Systems, Security Systems, etc.
**Accountabilities**:
- Responsible for maintaining the Process Control Domain (PCD) Integrity Work Process for the Scotford Facility.
- Technical lead for the site’s process control network (PCN) design. Responsible for managing Scotford’s entire PCD network architecture (maintaining, configuring, monitoring, and responding to network issues).
- Responsible for maintaining the secure network architecture for site. Includes firewall configuration, rule review, maintenance, and upgrades. This also includes network segmentation design to ensure the security/reliability of the various systems on site.
- Responsible for the reliability of Scotford’s virtual infrastructure. Includes managing a Hyper-V infrastructure (adding new Hyper-V servers, building VM’s, maintaining secure backups, etc).
- Working with projects to ensure cyber security is accounted for and ensure designs meets site’s PCD standards. Also includes supporting projects during execute as far as hardware installation and configuration.
- Lead activities to assure the PCD work process including local site assurance activities (monthly, quarterly and yearly reviews) as well as external audits.
- Frequent engagements with Site Leadership on PCD risk and PCD Integrity Work Process Health.
- Strong collaboration with system specialists, maintenance specialists and vendor contractors to maintain the PCD process.
- Collaborate with other departments (such as electrical and analyzer and predictive maintenance teams) to securely progress Scotford’s digitalization and transformation journey.
- Network with the Global PCD team to ensure alignment with global initiatives.
**Dimensions**_(Environment, Budget, Span of Control, Special Challenges, etc.)_:
- A broad skillset is required for this position. Flexibility and willingness to learn new skills is required since there will be an expectation to ensure all types of Automation Systems are supported.
- Shift coverage may be required for special events such as unit upsets, startups and shutdowns
- Off Hours call out support when required.
**Skills & Requirements**:
- Professional qualifications: Electrical or Chemical Engineering degree, or Instrumentation Engineering Technologist. Eligible for Professional status from APEGGA as a P.Eng. or P.L.(Eng).
- 10+ years relevant industrial experience in the areas of Engineering design, implementation, certification, and maintenance of ALL aspects of a large scale, high-complexity, integrated, high-availability Process Control System.
- Comprehensive knowledge of OT security fundamentals and the guiding OT Cyber-Security Frameworks.
- Expert knowledge of virtual system management (specifically Hyper-V systems but a working knowledge of VMWare would be an asset).
- Skilled with Windows Servers, enterprise anti-virus, endpoint security, SIEM, logging configurations, IDS/IPS, authentication methods, TCP/IP, packet capture, and analysis, WSUS.
- Knowledgeable in networking fundamentals including switching, routing, firewall management, IPSec/VPN tunnels, and encryption. Strong knowledge of Cisco and Palo Alto is preferred.
- Maintains a working knowledge of up-to-date IT, OT, and security technology trends.
- Expert knowledge of Foxboro I/A is strongly preferred.
- Solid knowledge of Triconex is preferred.
- Solid knowledge of Modicon PLC systems and related technologies is preferred.
- Proven, hands-on System Integration experience.
- Good knowledge of safe work practices and engineering obligations in an industrial environment including change management (MOC) work processes and procedures.
- Familiarity with maintenance practices, project scope development, turn-around and long-term planning is an asset
- Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
- Ability to work effectively within a multi-discipline team environment consisting of Engineering, Projects, Maintenance, and Operations, collaboratively troubleshooting, and solving plant issues.
- Organized, thorough, and professional.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with peers and clients.
- Ability to articulate and defend a case for change or improvement.
