**REPORTS TO**: DISASTER RECOVERY MANAGER

**PURPOSE & SUMMARY**

The Emergency Policy & Safety Officer is responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure efficient and effective responses to emergencies. This role involves coordinating with various departments, agencies, and organizations to establish comprehensive emergency communications and response protocols. The Officer will stay informed on current trends and developments in the field of emergency management, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards.

**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure efficient and effective response to emergencies, prioritizing public safety.
- Coordinate with other departments, agencies, and organizations to establish comprehensive emergency communications and response protocols.
- Continuously identify and analyze current trends and developments in the field of emergency management.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards related to emergency management and public safety.
- Evaluate the implementation of the new modernized Emergency Disaster Management Act and Regulations to inform the Disaster Recovery Manager on updated policies applicable to the Sumas First Nation Emergency Program.
- Build and maintain relationships with community leaders, partner agencies, and local government to facilitate effective emergency response.
- Provide the Disaster Recovery Manager with recommendations to support informed decision-making regarding public safety.
- Assess and manage risks to enhance the safety and security of the community and organization.
- Develop safety programs aimed at preventing accidents and incidents.
- Evaluate field operational safety plans to ensure compliance with safety protocols and procedures.
- Implement worker care initiatives to promote the health, safety, and well-being of all employees during emergency operations.
- Manage liability considerations by ensuring all safety practices and procedures are in line with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Respond to emergency incidents to provide on-site safety guidance and support.
- Perform other duties as required.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, Public Safety, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in emergency management, safety policy development, or a related role.
- Prior experience working with First Nations communities and/or organizations is an asset.
- Strong understanding of emergency management principles, practices, and regulations.
- Excellent communication and coordination skills.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and emergency management software.
- Possess a Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License.
- First Nations descent is considered an asset.

**Job Types**: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 6 months

Pay: $29.00-$33.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week
