THE OPPORTUNITY

Are you between 15 and 30 years of age and ready for an adventure in the GIS field? We’re seeking an enthusiastic and passionate individual to fill the role of the GIS Intern. As a member of our team, you’ll play a role in collecting GIS data which will also be relevant in advancing climate and environment initiatives for a greener, more sustainable future.
The GIS Intern is responsible for collecting field data such as site boundaries and park assets using handheld GIS mapping equipment from the City’s parks and environmentally significant areas. Training will be provided on operation of the GIS mapping equipment, GIS mapping, data collection, and tree and shrub identification. Collected site data will be utilized to update the city’s GIS database which is used for effective management and operation of parks and conservation of environmentally significant areas. The incumbent will also be involved with field data gathering using various field equipment and the information collected will be used to populate the City’s GIS system.
This position is partially Grant Funded and reports to the GIS Supervisor.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Walk through the City parks, environmentally sensitive areas using handheld GIS mapping equipment to capture necessary data points such as site boundaries and park assets, including but not limited to benches, signage, trails, trees, shrubs, etc.
- Compare existing GIS data to what exists in the parks, highlighting differences, updating existing data for quality indications, repairs required, etc.
- Responsible for the safe and effective use of equipment, completing inventories of assigned areas, working with and or presenting to other department staff to showcase the results of the data they captured.
- Responsible to provide their input in the planning process to capture a youth perspective.
- Participate in the City's positive corporate culture.

QUALIFICATIONS
- High level of attention to detail is required.
- Ability to operate survey equipment such as GPS, rod/level and electronic distance measuring equipment within City parks and natural areas.
- Good organizational skills and highly committed to meeting deadlines.
- Ability to prioritize and perform routine tasks and assignments, under close supervision or under clearly defined procedures.
- Ability to communicate and interact well both inside and outside the team to explain activities.
- Ability to participate in, and contribute to, a productive and collaborative team environment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This position is part of the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA) Green Jobs Initiative as part of their commitment to the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS) program. The incumbent must meet the following requirements:

- Between 15 and 30 years of age when employment begins (inclusive)
- A Canadian citizen, or permanent resident or a protected person as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
