Construct operates as a link to Employment Social Enterprises within Blue Door that fosters a labour market attachment for individuals facing barriers around employment in York Region. Construct provides training, supportive employment opportunities, case management, wrap-around supports, and assisting participants in gaining an apprenticeship and/or employment in the construction trades.

**Job Summary**

Reporting to the Manager, Training and Employment, Social Enterprise, the Shop Instructor will be responsible for the day-to-day social components of the program. This includes running the daily participant workshop training, construction math, and coordinating on-site work opportunities. The applicant must be willing to address issues head-on and actively seek ways to support program participants. This person must be a team player - participating in team meetings, providing new ideas on how to enhance and improve the program, as well as being flexible in completing various tasks as needed with consistency and within the values, goals and mission of the organization.

**Responsibilities**:

- Deliver daily participant training to support the development of hands-on trades skills, foundational tool knowledge, working safely on a job site, and construction math.
- Collaborate with the construction team to schedule on-site job opportunities for Construct trainees.
- Coordinate with Manager, Training and Employment, Social Enterprise and support staff to ensure participants are well supported throughout the program and beyond.
- Work closely alongside the on-site staff to address any underlying issues including conflict resolution and culture.
- Ensure trainees wear appropriate PPE and provide health and safety training.
- Coordinate with construction staff to provide on the job coaching, and ensure that Construct sites are an inclusive learning space for participants to grow their skills and employability.
- Ensure accountability among trainees to adhere to company policies and procedures and represent Blue Door’s values when working in the community.
- Conduct check-ins with on-site staff to ensure trainees are following health and safety guidelines and address any conflicts or barriers that may arise.
- Motivate trainees by providing constructive feedback that recognizes their hard work and achievements.
- Listen to trainees who need support and connect trainees to support staff as needed.
- Utilize de-escalation techniques to manage conflict on-site.
- Provide recommendations on how we can improve both the environments on site as well as any changes needed to support trainees and increase customer satisfaction.
- Maintain detailed log of tools, building materials, and products.
- Schedule regular maintenance for tool and vehicle checks.
- Examine new opportunities helping the program grow and continue to build out the resources and supports offered to program participants.
- Provide leadership through establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all stakeholders of the organization including program participants.

- Foster positive and appropriate relationships with clients, colleagues, community partners and volunteers.
- Provide referrals and follow-up as necessary.
- Meets with manager on a regular basis and participates in completion of annual performance evaluation.

**Occupational Health & Safety**

**Qualifications**:

- Minimum College Diploma in trades related field or work experience equivalent
- Experience working in the skilled trades is required
- Desire to support at-risk populations
- Experience in providing training and mentorship
- Thorough understanding of building principles and basic building code requirements
- Excellent communication (oral and written), time management, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Screening police check required.
- Valid Driver’s license, reliable vehicle and insurance to travel for work.
