**Job Synopsis**

The Newcomers Outreach Assistant will work with the MCC Migration and Resettlement Team and Refugee Sponsoring Groups to plan and implement an initiative called “Healing and Community Building.”
This is a 12-week contract role, 35 hours weekly.

This project is designed to reach out to newcomers and connect with sponsors to** **document stories and gather perspectives to inspire interest in supporting newcomers, sponsorship of refugees as well as for educational and program sustainability purposes**.** The project will be implemented through a variety of community engagement, outreach and social inclusion activities with the objective of collection and compilation of stories. Additionally, this person will also provide general program support.

**Qualifications**

**Required**
- Strong oral and written communication skills essential
- Experience or training in collection and compilation of creative and engaging stories
- Strong organizational skills and attention to details
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently and with the ability to prioritize tasks
- Respect for and discretion in dealing with confidential matters required
- Willingness to work with sensitivity with volunteers and within a diverse cultural and theological milieu required
- Ability to work non-standard hours required, including evenings and weekends, as necessary
- Working knowledge of computer skills - including excel required
- Free to travel domestically within Ontario: valid Ontario driver's license.

To be eligible, youth must:

- Meet all qualifications of the Canada Summer Jobs Program.
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the _Immigration and Refugee Protection Act_ for the duration of the employment and,
- have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.

**Key Responsibilties**

**Duties**:

- Plan and implement opportunities for community engagement and social inclusion with newcomers and sponsors throughout the summer.
- Facilitate opportunities to connect, collect and document stories from newcomers and sponsors at events.
- Conduct interviews with members of the sponsoring churches/groups on the support role in helping newcomers settle and integrate into the Canadian life.
- Encourage and facilitate the collection and submission of stories from our sponsors across the province.
- Compile stories with use of mixed medias to illustrate life in Country of Origin and in Canada and create a pictorial book.
- Support the Migration and Resettlement Team and other Community Partners in planning and implementing activities related to World Refugee Day on June 20th.

- Participate in MCCO orientations and provincial meetings.
- Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use his/her personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interaction with others.
- Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized.
- Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and public; communicate MCC's values, articulating the importance of MCC's criteria for workers, all of whom serve as representatives of the Mennonite and Be in Christ churches which support MCC.
- Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public.
