**Working for the Department/Faculty**

Human Resources, Health, Safety and Environment (HRHSE) is responsible for human resources; recruitment; compensation; job design and evaluation; benefits; health, safety and environment practices; health and wellbeing; learning and development; labour relations; employee recognition; and work force planning. The department collaborates to provide quality, innovative programs and services that are responsive to the needs of our diverse and dynamic community. At the U of A, safety is a core value and is central to how we work, study, and conduct research. Our Health, Safety and Environment team plays a central role in promoting and maintaining safety as a core value.

**Position Summary**

Reporting to the Manager, Inspections and Technical Services, the Health and Safety Advisor (Advisor) works with staff across all U of A campuses to assess and promote health and safety practices. The Advisor works as part of the team of health and safety professionals in the Inspections and Technical Services (ITS) team of the Department of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). ITS works closely with University staff, including academic researchers and their staff, facilities and operations personnel and administrative staff across all U of A campuses. The Advisor will have specific competencies in the area of Occupational Hygiene, but will also be responsible for worksite inspections and technical programs under the direction of the Manager, ITS.

**Duties**

Deliver and support institutional health and safety programs including:

- Conduct laboratory safety inspections
- Conduct testing of safety equipment including calibration
- Contribute to laboratory safety training programs
- Undertake equipment (fume hood, biological safety cabinets) as required
- Respond to incidents and participate in incident investigations
- Conduct occupational hygiene assessments
- Provide Respirator Fit testing, including advice and training.

**Qualifications**
- Diploma or post secondary degree in Occupational Health and Safety
- CRST or CRSP preferred, consideration given to those working towards designation
- Three to five years experience working in a health and safety role, preferably in academia or science related research environments
- Knowledge and understanding of Health, Safety and Environment Management Systems
- Knowledge and understanding of the post-secondary setting an asset
- Knowledge and understanding of federal, provincial, municipal acts, regulations, codes, standards, bylaws and guidelines associated with a broad range of conventional safety hazards
- Knowledge and understanding of hazard and assessment processes and development of Standard Operating Procedures, policies and procedures
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to find workable solutions that meet regulatory requirements
- Incident investigation and reporting writing skills
- Strong relationship building and communication skills and the ability to work with diverse stakeholder groups
- Computer literacy
- Strong data management (eg: excel) and reporting skills
