The Mental Health Society of Greater Victoria is looking for volunteers to join our Outreach team in _**Vancouver, BC**_ As a volunteer organization originally based out of Victoria, our mission is to improve mental health in cities in British Columbia by improving access to local support services. As part of a new initiative, we will be working alongside the CMHA to ensure people living in Vancouver have the opportunity to be supported by a peer when seeking help for their mental health or substance use. We need volunteers to fulfill **two (2) **volunteer roles.

**Program Helpers**: helping with set up/take down, materials, record keeping, assisting people using service directories, adding people to the CMHA Peer Nav program, working with library/community center staff to ensure program success, and more.

**Peer Guides**:creating a safe space to drop in, welcoming others to the space, helping facilitate activities, directing those with appointments or in need of one-on-one support to Peer Navigator staff, listening to people’s stories, and more. _**This position requires lived experience with mental health challenges and/or experience supporting others with mental health concerns.**_

On top of these roles, we are also looking for people who speak the following languages to be able to connect with underserved populations: Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, Korean, as well as any other second language.

Please note that these are two distinct positions. However, there may be opportunities to do both for interested volunteers.

**Format & Time Commitment**:
We are a volunteer organization that adapts to our volunteers' availability. These positions are all in-person, with our main locations being the **Mt. Pleasant** and **nə́c̓aʔmat ct Strathcona **branches of the Vancouver Public Library.

We require a minimum commitment of **1 **shift/month. Shifts are flexible, from **2-4** hours per shift.

**Required skills and experience**:

- Passionate about mental health
- Empathetic and non-judgemental
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Excellent organizational skills
- Sensitive to diverse circumstances and needs of the public (e.g.., low-income, urgent support, LGBTQ2+ friendly)
- Past or present experience living in Vancouver, BC
- Lived experience with mental health challenges (your own experience or experience supporting a friend/loved one)

**Bonus skills and experience**:

- Second language (especially Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, Korean)
- Informed about a broad range of mental health diagnoses and challenges
- Previous nonprofit experience
- Mental health training (e.g., mental health first aid, suicide prevention certification, professional experience with at-risk populations, etc)
