Location/Time: Thursdays, 08:35 am-11:25 am, FERRIER 476

TQRs:

- MSW degree or equivalent.
- At least 5 years of demonstrated social work, community development or advocacy experience with a focus on international and community development.
- The role of international and community development theories, policies, actors and intervention in social work practice.
- Levels of Intervention: Personal, Organisational, Local, Provincial, National, and International.
- Economic theories of development: Colonialism, Modernization, Development and Underdevelopment, Neoliberal Development, “Third Way” Development.
- Social location as a variable in development: Gender and development, Racism and development, and Indigenous development.
- Theories of Development, including: Assets-based development, Social capital, Community Economic Development (CED), and Empowerment.
- Major Actors in International and Community Development and their respective roles, including: Governmental (International, national, provincial and local), Nonprofit (International NGOs, development NGOs, community organisations), Private (International, national and local business interests), and Informal (Individual, family, community networks).
- Objects of development, including: Economy (International, national, regional and local), Government (Democratic institutions, policy, management), Infrastructure (Transportation, communication, housing, sanitation, energy, health), and Social capital (Community organizations, popular education, formal training).
- Structures for community development in Quebec, including: History of the community sector (church, state, community, state, community/private); Government ministries; and Debates (Community/State partnerships, PPPs, future of the welfare state).
- International Policy frameworks for development, including: UN Agencies (UNDP, UNIFEM, UNICEF, UNHabitat, etc); Financial Actors (World Bank, International Monetary Fund, private lenders); and Paragovernmental (World Health Organization, International Labour Organisation).
