**PURPOSE**: Reporting to the Embracing Life and Youth Services Manager, the purpose of the Youth Worker is to provide support to community youth and provide administrative support to the Youth Services program. This full-time permanent position will work in office and in community with local travel required. Working hours are 1:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday with some events.

**COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS**:Cowichan Tribes offers an excellent benefit and pension plan available after successful completion of the probationary period. The position includes paid training and paid sick leave. Depending on experience, the position starts at $20.89 - $22.15 per hour ($38,010.98 - $40,305.28 annually).

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Provide Support to Community Youth:

- Communicate current opportunities for youth such as funding opportunities, academic and athletic opportunities, and other information
- Provide basic individual counselling to youth and provide support strategies
- Refer community members to internal and external resources when appropriate
- Assist in coordinating youth events, including guest speakers, event location, and other detail
- Assist in coordinating yearly summer camp activities for youth
- Debrief with the Youth Services team regarding outcomes of group sessions and program activities
- Develop and recommend group session curriculum and topics to be addressed
- Prepare group activities
- Co-facilitate youth group sessions
- Prepare daily snacks for youth

Provide Administrative Support to the Program:

- Develop publications and documents as needed, such as posters, newsletter inserts and correspondence
- Attend department staff meetings and team meetings
- Ensure youth safety at all times
- Develop trusting relationships with youth
- Complete light cleaning duties as needed
- Other related duties as required

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**:_**(please attach all required documents)**_
- Grade 12 Graduation required
- Certificate in Child & Youth Care, Social Work or other related field considered an asset
- 1 year experience working with youth required
- Experience working in a First Nations community is essential, and a willingness to learn about culture, customs and traditions of Cowichan people
- Valid class 5 BC driver’s license with reliable vehicle and satisfactory driver’s abstract
- Certification in First Aid, CPR and Foodsafe
- Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector check is required
- Assist Training certificate considered an asset
- Effective December 1, 2021: full vaccination against COVID-19 is required to be eligible for employment at Cowichan Tribes. All individuals must show Proof of Vaccination as a mandatory condition of their employment.

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**:

- Knowledge of behavioral and mental health issues that face First Nation youth
- Knowledge of Cowichan culture, customs and traditions or a willingness to learn
- Knowledge of internal and external community resources
- Well-developed written, oral and interpersonal skills
- Organizational skills
- Time management with the ability to multitask different tasks simultaneously
