Located at the head of Lake Ontario and within the municipalities of Burlington and Hamilton, Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is the largest botanical garden in Canada and one of the nation’s earliest nature sanctuaries. RBG dedicates its expertise in horticulture, conservation, science and education to connect people, plants and place for the purpose of nurturing and preserving healthy growing life on our planet.
- Under the guidance of the Sr Director of Ecosystem Stewardship, completes work projects in accordance with Ministry of Environment legislation, ecological best practices and RBG’s environmental sustainability objectives. **This is a 6 month temporary contract position.**

**Roles and Responsibilities**
- Maintains ground conditions, carries out path maintenance, repairs, pruning, and grooming on RBG’s nature sanctuaries and access points.
- Performs rough carpentry work to construct, maintain, and repair boardwalks and viewing platforms. Completes painting projects, and graffiti removal.
- Operates cranes, loaders/excavators, dump trucks, skid steer equipment, mowers, chainsaws and gators.
- Participates in land restoration and infrastructure projects including transportation of materials, erecting and repairing fences, and removal of large invasive woody plants.
- Participates in nuisance/injured species activities such as trapping, and disposal of dead animals.
- Provides services for educational, scientific, and special event activities including site orientation and preparation.
- Undertakes storm damage cleanup and maintenance, flooding repairs and mitigation.
- Assists in providing direction for contracted hazard tree service and coordinates work of seasonally employed students.

**Qualifications**
- Knowledge of and proven experience maintaining natural lands and trails.
- Awareness of pertinent environmental legislation such as the Fisheries Act, the Migratory Bird Act, the Species at Risk Act, Provincial Fish and Game Act and Provincial Endangered Species Act.
- Valid Class G driver’s license and experience operating loaders/excavators, dump trucks, skid steer equipment and John Deere gators.
- Demonstrated experience operating overhead cranes.
- Proven experience using power tools, hand tools, and shop equipment in the performance of rough carpentry projects.
- Experience in animal handling, trapping and relocation, as well as an understanding of the process for disposal of deceased wildlife.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

**Working Conditions**
- This position requires working a minimum 40 hour work week, including evenings and weekends as required as selected projects are influenced by species behaviors and weather conditions.
- Both indoor and outdoor work in most weather conditions and environments.
- Repetitive movements associated tool associated with rough carpentry tools and the operation of heavy or vibrating equipment.
