Aboriginal Head Start offers two programs a day from Monday to Thursday at 9 am - 11:15 am or 12:45 pm - 3:30 pm. This is a licensed preschool for children ages 3 to 5 years.
This program focuses on Aboriginal Culture, has qualified Early Childhood Educators and provides transportation and meals.
The overall goal of the Comox Valley Aboriginal Head Start program is to foster the early childhood development of Aboriginal children in conjunction with plans and methods designed by Aboriginal people for Aboriginal people.
**About the role**:
Cooking for Aboriginal Head Start is much more than just cooking meals. You will be ensuring that the children attending will get the nutrition and full bellies they need for their bodies and minds, as well as teaching through traditional foods. This is a somewhat unsupervised job for 1 and the kitchen is small but very functional. Though you will take direction from the Supervisor in the form of menu planning and budget.
**Responsibilities**:
- Cook breakfast and lunch for children ages 3-5
- Prep all foods.
- Wash all dishes from service and meal prep.
- Coordinate with Lead ECE and staff about special events (Birthdays, Field trips etc).
- Menu Plan.
- Plan traditional food tasting and new food tastings.
- Keep the kitchen clean and up to code.
- Interact well with Children (Semi open kitchen where the children love to see what's going on.)
- Food Safe, 2 years cooking experience or graduation from a culinary program
- The ability to work under direction but unsupervised.
- The ability to stand for long amounts of time.
- Good with talking to and working with children and others.
Priority will be given to applicants with Aboriginal Ancestry and experience.
