The Nanaimo Airport Commission (“NAC”) is a not-for-profit airport authority, created in 1990, to manage the Nanaimo Airport (“YCD”). The NAC owns the 224-hectare airport campus located in Cassidy, British Columbia approximately a 15-minute drive south of Nanaimo.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Operations, the Summer Student is a multi-disciplined role responsible for working closely with co-workers, supervisors, and managers to effectively maintain, preserve, and respond to items typically associated with the management of:

- Airport
- Assets
- Emergencies
- Environment
- Safety
- Security

Working under the direction of the Senior Manager of Operations and the Duty Manager, the Summer Student is responsible for maintaining YCD facilities, grounds, equipment, and operating a variety of light equipment to perform such duties. The Summer Student also removes debris from airport surfaces, as well as provide support for crash, fire and rescue when responding to emergencies.

**ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES**

This position requires adherence to all Canadian Aviation Regulations (CAR), Canadian Aviation Security Regulations (CASR), Transport Canada Technical Publications and Advisory Circulars, all other applicable federal and provincial legislation, and regulations, as well as the policies, bylaws, and best practices indicated by the Nanaimo Airport Commission.

**AIRPORT OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT**
- Operate various pieces of equipment, sweepers, lawn mowers, weed sprayers and trimmers.
- Apron and passenger management.

**ASSET MANAGEMENT**
- Maintenance and operation of the airport’s buildings, equipment, and infrastructure.
- Inspect airport buildings and facilities to ensure a high standard of cleanliness and professional appearance is maintained.
- Perform preventative maintenance activities, minor repairs, cleaning, and servicing of equipment.

**EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT**
- Respond to emergency incidents both on and off airport property and decisively acting in accordance with the stated roles and responsibilities of the Emergency Response Plan (ERP).
- Participate in training exercises with local emergency response agencies.
- Participate with outside responding agencies for purposes of practice exercises, tabletops, and disaster preparedness.

**ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT**
- Collect and submit environmental monitoring samples.
- Work closely with members of the Operations Team to manage and maintain regulatory compliance with respect to water, waste, vegetation, habitat, wildlife, spill response, etc.

**SAFETY MANAGEMENT**
- Contribute to the success of the Safety Management System (SMS).
- Assist in conducting comprehensive inspections, investigations, safety checks, audits, root cause analysis, recommendations for corrective actions, and required documentation.
- Ensure compliance with safety programs and regulations.
- Accountable with all other staff for overall Safety and Security performance of the airport operation.

**SECURITY MANAGEMENT**
- Ensure all security checks, monitoring, and escorting have been completed and documented.
- Monitoring and utilizing the digital security system as required.
- Completing security activities, tasks and administrative duties as assigned.

**EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION**
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence.

**EXPERIENCE**
- Previous work experience in grounds maintenance, vegetation management is preferred, but not essential.

- Experience using and operating a variety of hand tools/vegetation management tools.
- Safety and/or security training an asset.
- Basic to mid-level computer skills in an MS Office operating environment.
- Must be able to obtain an Airside Vehicle Operator Permit (AVOP) and Radio Operator’s Certificate - Aeronautical.
- Ability to meet Transport Canada security clearance requirements.
- Must be able pass an RCMP records check.
- Must agree to work according to the Modified Work Agreement.
