YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR

The Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture (CCVT) is looking for an experienced person to fill the position of Youth Mental Health Counselor. The Youth Mental Health Counselor is part of a flexible team who deliver services to torture survivors and their families.

**Specific responsibilities include**:

- Perform psychosocial assessment and counselling/therapy to individuals and groups using brief counselling modalities.
- Act as a client advocate on individual and systemic issues.
- Perform case management functions.
- Maintain documentation on client files; update Service Registry regularly; contribute to chart documentation, participate in chart reviews and case conferences
- Participate in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of treatment, education, counselling and health promotion programs and services for individuals, groups.
- Work closely with settlement and trauma counselors and partner organizations.
- Provide client services at partner agencies and satellite locations, in addition to main office
- Prepare and deliver public education presentations
- Prepare reports on volume and effectiveness of client services as per funder requirements

**Required Qualifications**:

- BSW or equivalent degree in a health or social science discipline.
- Knowledge of refugee youth and settlement issues and services.
- At least 2 years’ experience as a therapist or counsellor working with people with mental health and/or substance use issues
- At least one year of direct service experience working with Immigrant, refugee and racialized populations addressing substance use and/or mental health problems
- Excellent engagement and assessment skills
- Strong brief intervention skills such as solution focused and cognitive behavioral approaches
- Commitment to working within an anti-oppressive framework and demonstrated understanding of the links between trauma and mental health, emotional health, and substance use problems
- Excellent knowledge of relevant community resources
- Ability to work effectively in physical offices or virtual environments
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Extensive knowledge and experience working with the LGBTQIA+ population
- Fluency (written and spoken) English and additional language(s) is required

**Location**: Any of CCVT locations.
