Parks Operations & Services has an exciting new opportunity for an individual to perform skilled and varied horticultural work in our City parks and public areas. Under the direction of a supervisor, you will be responsible for carrying out skilled gardening work including: assisting with the design and maintenance of ornamental areas, developing new horticultural areas, operating irrigation systems, cultivating turf, flowers, plants, shrubs, and parks and boulevard trees, and assisting with greenhouse and nursery operations. As a Gardener 1, you will also be expected to participate in the construction, renovation and maintenance of various landscaped and horticultural areas.

**Requirements for this position**:

- Completion of a related diploma, or the completion of a horticulture apprenticeship plus considerable related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience as deemed suitable by the employer.****:

- Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, practices and equipment used in horticultural and arboricultural work.
- Able to carry out written and verbal instructions from a supervisor with mínimal supervision.****:

- Able to train and oversee the work of staff engaged in performing similar work as required.
- Ability to respond courteously and effectively to basic questions, concerns and requests from the public, other City departments and various agencies with regard to horticultural matters.****:

- Able to perform pest and disease control in accordance with IPM best practices.****:

- Ability to operate and perform minor maintenance and repairs on landscape irrigation systems and a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Ability to perform physical and manual work and work in all weather conditions.
- The ability to pass and maintain a clear Police Information Check.
