**Working for the Department**

Facilities and Operations is a diverse envelope of services that is responsible for managing the buildings across our five campuses. Facilities and Operations manages capital construction and renovations, providing utilities and energy management to delivering student and campus services. Facilities and Operations works behind the scenes to make the university one of the top places in the world to study, live and work in.

This position is part of Engineering & Operations, which is located within the Asset Management and Operations unit. Engineering and Operations provides mechanical, electrical and technical design support to the University of Alberta and ultimately, creates an environment that is not only pleasing to the eye, but also functional for U of A students, faculty, staff and visitors.

The Operations team works closely with the Trades team to support building infrastructure initiatives in over 100 buildings on campus including HVAC, Building Security systems, Unified Communication Centre dispatch, and Building Management systems. The technicians and tradespeople within these roles are a major resource to the overall functional abilities of the university.

**Position Summary**

The Locksmith is required by law to be security-audited and registered with Alberta Justice and Solicitor General. This position is charged with the responsibility of providing a safe and secure environment for the University Community at large. The journeyperson locksmith provides continuous service (including the participation in standby on a rotating basis) ensuring that all emergency situations such as lost or stolen keys, break-ins, insecure doors, vandalism, etc., are dealt with in a timely manner. In addition to providing these services, it is the responsibility of the Locksmith to manage and maintain high security keying systems for private organizations affiliated with the University of Alberta.

Locksmiths install, adjust and repair locks, make keys, and change lock combinations. They work on residential and institutional locksets and door hardware. Locksmiths may also install and maintain more sophisticated security systems

**Duties**
- Service and repair all door hardware and record any changes made for each door opening.
- Verify door numbers against plan numbers, make necessary amendments, and submit a report.
- Verify the physical security and/or fire-rating, where applicable, for each door opening.
- Make any corrections to ensure the proper level of security and/or fire-rating standards.
- Log the maintenance data and record recommendations for upgrades or replacement
- Master keying is the manipulation of number combinations to provide maximum security, while still meeting the user groups' requirements. The University Complex has over 200,000 keyed locks which use eight different sophisticated master key systems unique to the University of Alberta.
- These master key systems consist of elevator control, high-security, restricted, and the Yale Bi-Centric. The Locksmith is expected to be able to develop, record, maintain and upgrade these systems to meet the future requirements of the Campus. There is also a master keying plan that has been developed and must be maintained in conjunction with the appropriate factory i.e. Abloy, Schlage, BEST and Medeco.
