Job Description:
Reporting to the Manager of Student Counselling and Wellness Supports, this Counsellor will predominantly offer individual counselling appointments to students, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m, three or four days per week (24 hour weekly). This position requires regular on-site work at Algonquin College’s Woodroffe Campus.

This role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with a wide range of mental health and wellness related challenges faced by the student population. Work may also include facilitating groups and/or providing workshops and in-class presentations. All members of the Counselling Services team operate from a trauma informed lens and provide intervention that aligns with current evidence-based practice and professional practice standards.

Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, Educational Counselling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or closely related field;- Minimum of 1,600 hours (equivalent to 2 years full time) of recent (within the past 5 years) client contact experience in the provision of counselling services (post-masters);- Training and/or certification in suicide risk assessment and intervention;- Eligible for registration with one of the colleges approved to regulate the provision of psychotherapy in Ontario (e.g., College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers).

Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated experience in counselling in a post-secondary education institution and thorough understanding of the unique challenges faced by the post-secondary student population;- Demonstrated training and experience offering individual counselling, through brief intervention, including offering service remotely;- Demonstrated experience in a walk-in and single-session counselling environment;- Demonstrated training in and knowledge of trauma informed care practices;- Demonstrated training and experience conducting suicide risk assessments and interventions;- Demonstrated ability to function as part of a multidisciplinary team;- Demonstrated cultural competence within the counselling environment;- Demonstrated training and experience implementing psychoeducational and therapeutic groups;- Demonstrated knowledge of resources and referral options in the community;- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills;- Demonstrated computer skills; including the proficient use of an electronic client record system.
