Nîsôhkamâtotân [Nee-so-ka-ma-to-tan] is a Cree word meaning “let’s help each other”. The Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre is a community gathering place where Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students can gather to network, study and share their post-secondary learning experiences. It is a place where culture and tradition are welcome and encouraged. Reporting to the VP Students and Campus Life, the Manager, Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre is responsible to lead the center, an integral part of the overall NAIT community and is committed to ensuring Aboriginal student success both inside and outside of the classroom. The successful individual will be an advocate and representing NAIT with respect to Aboriginal viewpoints on institutional and external committees. The Manager, Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre is also responsible for the development & maintenance of the Aboriginal Strategy for NAIT. They will liaise with Aboriginal communities and organizations, school jurisdictions and government agencies to promote NAIT. This position succeeds through thorough knowledge of Aboriginal ways of being and knowing.

**Key Responsibilities**:
Supervision
- Manage program budgets, financial projections and expenditures as well as resource requirements
- Supervise program staff and facilitate staff development
- Manage Aboriginal Student Centre programming: Implementation and provision of program services
- Establish and support a warm, friendly, welcoming atmosphere for students, staff and visitors to the Aboriginal Student Centre

Community Liaison
- Support recruitment and retention of Aboriginal students
- Facilitate and enhance Elders Programs
- Coordinate resources for mentorship, role modeling and student ambassador programs
- Build and maintain relationships with community partners, employer partnerships, and provide employer services to students
- Provide support to, develop and implement programs to assist students in promoting individual growth and academic success
- Work with Aboriginal agencies to acquire resources to all for enhancement of services offered to Aboriginal students.
- Support Aboriginal students to complete their studies.
- Work with Aboriginal communities and agencies to identify barriers to greater student participation and formulate recommendations to remove these barriers.
- Recommend and implement processes that support the Institute in providing enhanced services to the Aboriginal students.
- Determine and make appropriate referrals for students requiring support services: Advocating for individual students when necessary.
- Provide student referrals to financial support programs, sponsorship programs, award opportunities, scholarships and funding options

Advisor to Institute Staff
- Participate and report to and on related committees
- Coordinate Aboriginal Cultural Awareness programming for staff
- Liaise with instructional staff to plan appropriate support for Aboriginal students.
- Participate and work cooperatively with NAIT departments, community resource people and cultural resource people
- Manage and assist in organized presentations, workshops, tours and special events, on and off campus
- Promote NAIT and NAIT’s Aboriginal support services and programs
- Provide reporting to Elders, staff, and NAIT executive

**Skills & Abilities**:

- Must demonstrate knowledge of and sensitivity towards the political considerations inherent in working with Aboriginal peoples, agencies and organizations.
- Familiarity with Government policies and programs related to development of Aboriginal communities is essential.
- The position requires thorough knowledge of Academic Regulations and Policies and Procedures related to student rights and responsibilities.
- Knowledge of Treaties and the way Aboriginal Communities function.
- Knowledge of Acts and Legislation relevant to training and education of Aboriginals is essential (including Band and Tribal Funding regulations).
- A thorough understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Document
- Effective oral and written skills are essential
- Knowledge of Aboriginal language and community is required.
- An ability to translate between Western communication and teaching principles and the Aboriginal ways of knowing and learning.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with industry
- Proficiency is required to use computer software and hardware

**Qualifications**:

- Undergraduate degree in Native or Indigenous Studies (or similarly related)
- Several years of leadership experience
- Experience in an institutional setting an asset

**Remuneration**: $87,684.22- $116,170.86 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
