Job Description - Director of Care
- **Reports to**:_ General Manager
- **Qualifications**:_

1. Current license with the Ontario College of Nurses in good standing (see policy: HR 1.3 Employee File - Documentation Requirements).

2. Demonstrated experience with medication administration (if medications provided).

3. Previous employment in a health care/hospitality setting an asset.

4. Demonstrated understanding of/empathy for the needs of seniors.

5. Knowledge of the Nursing practices and nursing diagnosis.

6. Certified in CPR and First Aid.

7. Good communication and leadership skills.

8. Willingness to update and keep current their knowledge of changing regulations, practices and procedures as required by the College of Nurses.

9. Demonstrated experience in managing a budget.

1. Current First Aid and CPR Certification recommended

2. Police Record Check (as per RHA), including VSC

3. Immunization as per home’s policy, if applicable

4. TB Testing
- **Physical Demands**:_

1. Sitting for extended periods at a desk for computer/typing work.

2. Standing for extended periods of time.

3. Walking short distances and up/down staircases.

4. Typing and/or use of a computer keyboard proficiently.

5. Pulling/pushing/lifting to open and/or relocate binders, carts, etc. up to 10lbs.

6. Reading/seeing documentation both in paper format and on a computer screen for extended periods of time.

7. Hearing differences in phone ring tones and/or in fire system horns or alerts for emergency response purposes.

8. Speaking/communicating in front of audiences.

9. Bending, kneeling, providing walking support for residents in the provision of resident care where required.

10. Dexterity required to open pouches/blister packs, insert test strips into glucometers, etc.
- **Responsibilities**:_

1. Provide professional nursing care to all residents and supervise care given in the nursing unit.

2. Assess all resident needs and planning, implementing and evaluating the care program.

3. Work closely with General Manager, Attending Physicians, Food Services and Activity/Recreation.

4. Supervise all staff in nursing unit.

1. Provide directions and supervision of all Care staff.

2. Assess residents' conditions by recognizing signs and symptoms and where necessary initiates remedial health measures.

3. Contacting resident's attending physician when there is a change in resident's physical or mental condition.

4. Responsible to ensure safekeeping of drug and narcotic keys.

5. Oversee the medication administration program.

6. Monitors staff performance and completes performance appraisals during probation period and annually thereafter.

7. Responsible for leadership, coaching, and mentoring to all regulated and Unregulated Care Providers.

8. Teaches good health habits.

9. Deals courteously with staff, residents, residents' families and visitors.

10. Responsible for admission and discharge of residents.

11. Maintain liaison with families of residents.

12. Takes prospective residents and other interested persons on tours of The Carrington.

13. Ensures medical records are maintained.

14. Ensures all personal health information is maintained as per PHIPA.

15. Ensures daily/weekly and monthly duties are completed and rosters are maintained.

16. Organizing and ensuring medications are reviewed in keeping with the residence’s medication review cycle, where medications are provided.

17. Completes monthly weights and blood pressures on all residents.

18. Coordinates and/or participates in the staff development, quality assurance, safety, environment and infection control programs.

19. Ensures staff involvement in fire and safety procedures and communication to all staff of inspection reports and follow up actions.

20. Ensures Information Package is distributed to all new admissions.

21. Knowledgeable of the Residential Tenancies Act.

22. Initiate review of Resident Care policy and procedure as per the designated review schedule and as required.

23. Ensures nursing documentation is complete as per College of Nurses' Nursing Documentation guidelines.

24. Assists with arranging transportation for residents.

25. Answers call bells and assist where necessary. Lead/initiate/monitor emergency response protocol and effectiveness for the department.

26. Orders medications from pharmacy as per Doctor's orders.

27. Receives medications and ensures safe storage of medications.

28. Serves and supervises at meals - assist with resident satisfaction.

29. Adheres to all established policies and procedures.

30. Responsible for making the appropriate plans for discharge as necessary.

31. Completes and follows up on incident reports where necessary.

32. Supervises resident's personal hygiene and bathing as per schedule, or assisting when necessary.

33. Assists residents with ambulation when necessary.

34. Provides emergency medical care.
