Front Line Support Worker

The Vancouver Women’s Health Collective (VWHC) is looking for a passionate and dedicated employee to fill the role of Frontline Support Worker at our drop-in centre based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
**About Us**
The Vancouver Women's Health Collective (VWHC) is a non-profit organization helping all who identify as women, non-binary, and gender non-conforming foster health, wellness, and equity through feminist approaches to advocacy, shared knowledge, and mínimal-barrier programs and services. Since 1971, VWHC has supported women in their efforts to share their ideas and advocate for changes in the healthcare system; educate themselves about their reproductive health and rights; connect to female health practitioners providing women-centred care; and access fully funded or specialized care, mental health services, social housing, amongst others.
VWHC currently runs a drop-in centre at 29 W. Hastings Street, on the unceded territories of the the xwməθkwəyəm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaʔɬ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil Waututh) nations. Our drop-in centre offers donations of food, clothing, and hygiene items as well as washrooms, showers, and respite areas. We also provide computer access. Through partnerships, the VWHC facilitates access to naturopathic clinics, counselling, Indigenous cultural care, and yoga classes. A team of staff, peers, and volunteers provide drop-in guests with both emotional and practical support.
**Job Duties**
Reporting to the Executive Director and working alongside our Drop-In Coordinator and Knowledge Keeper, the Frontline Support Worker provides drop-in guests with a range of day-to-day holistic supports and assists with running the centre.
Specifically, the Frontline Support Worker’s duties include the following:
- Opening and closing the centre, as well as maintaining a supportive presence during opening hours
- Assisting our Drop-In Coordinator with recruitment, engagement, management, and retention of our frontline volunteers
- Assisting with program facilitation and development as needed
- De-escalating crises, assisting in conflict resolution, and setting boundaries as well as conducting safety/wellness checks and responding to emergency situations (including overdoses)
- Documenting and reporting incidents in line with organizational procedures
- Developing rapport and therapeutic relationships with our drop-in guests, as appropriate, and maintaining a welcoming sense of community
- Providing emotional support and active listening to guests who may be experiencing stress and trauma as well as mental health and substance use challenges
- Maintaining confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws and ethical standards when interacting with guests and volunteers
- Referring guests to external resources
- Supporting Drop-in Coordinator with administrative tasks as needed, such as: Social media, sourcing donations, ensuring donations are kept well in stock, and making sure drop-in information and calendars are kept up to date
- Assuring that our appliances and electronics are functioning and up to date, and supporting Drop-in Coordinator with sourcing replacements as needed
- Assisting Drop-in Coordinator with taking Inventory when needed
- Supporting frontline volunteers with janitorial duties and housekeeping, maintaining a safe and clean environment
- Participating in staff meetings and training sessions to ensure best practices and professional development are maintained
**Qualifications**
We are seeking the following qualifications:
- Minimum 2 years of experience in frontline social services and/or lived and living experience related to the community we serve
- The capacity to enthusiastically utilize a trauma-informed, justice-oriented, and strengths-based approach, in keeping with the principles of intersectionality
- Commitment to prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as accessibility
- A demonstrated passion for VWHC’s mission
- Knowledge and awareness of issues that affect VWHC participants (Complex trauma, mental health, substance use, poverty, systemic oppression, discrimination, stigma)
- Proven ability to de-escalate crises and respond to emergency situations
- Resourcefulness and adaptability to respond to the organization’s demands
- Ability to work collectively and foster collaborative relationships within the VWHC and in the community
- Ability to problem solve in a complex environment and think strategically
- Demonstrated initiative as well as excellent organizational skills
- Knowledge of community resources
- First Aid certificate
- Naloxone Administration certificate
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificate is an asset
- Existing connection to the Downtown Eastside community is preferred
**Job Types**: Part-time, Fixed term contract
Pay: $28.00 per hour
