**Description**:
The Dean’s role is to provide their portfolio with academic leadership, to encourage excellence in teaching, to represent the portfolio to the College, to promote the development of the portfolio and its staff, and to manage its activities through the most effective and cost-efficient use of its resources, within the framework of the College’s Strategic Plan and policies.
Deans have a senior leadership role and are responsible for the proper conduct of their portfolios in accordance with the College’s rules and regulations. They are accountable to and report directly to the Vice President Academic.
NATURE & SCOPE:
- You will work collaboratively to provide strategic leadership to the portfolio and the programs contained within, serving as the primary representative of the portfolio to other departments and external bodies.
- You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
- You will promote a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
**Knowledge and Skills**:
- Minimum three year’s managerial experience and five years of post-secondary teaching experience; a combination of other experience may be considered.
- Experience promoting a positive work atmosphere demonstrating mutual respect.
- Understanding of the system, philosophy, and mandate of colleges in British Columbia.
- Familiarity with Skilled Trades BC and provincial labour market outlooks for the CNC region.
- Experience with Indigenous education in a college context.
- Exceptional judgment, accountability, decision making and problem-solving skills.
- Experience administering collective agreements.
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
(i) Providing strategic leadership in the development and operation of the portfolio, and particularly in:
- developing and implementing (in consultation with the Senior Educational Leadership Council SELC) long-term academic and management plans and policies, incorporating a coherent set of objectives for teaching. This will include the production of a multi-year rolling plan for operational and strategic priorities;
- developing, planning, and managing human resources for the portfolio within a college-wide framework, including recruitment, training and development, and career development of staff;
- fostering and facilitating a supportive environment and ethos for intra
- and inter-portfolio collaboration and external collaborations work. This will include ensuring that the portfolio explores new markets and responds to them;
- working with other members of the senior management team to promote the College’s Strategic, Academic, and other cascading plans.
(ii) Shaping and be responsible for controlling the portfolio budget within the funding constraints set during the budget-setting cycle, including:
- informing the allocation of funding between departments;
- reporting regularly to Executive and internal designated bodies;
- acting as the reporting officer for the portfolio and providing financial accountability to the College. This will include agreeing on targets for revenue and expenditure with the Vice President Academic or designated departments.
(iii) Managing and developing the staff in the portfolio, including:
- recruiting and selecting staff within policy and collective agreement guidelines;
- career development in accordance with institutional policies and procedures and collective agreement guidelines.
(iv) Acting as an advocate for the portfolio and ensuring its views are represented to officers and committees in the College.
(v) Working towards fulfilling the requirements of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and the British Columbia Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
(vi) Supporting and promoting the implementation of strategic enrolment management SEM within the college and the portfolio.
(vii) Promoting the portfolio externally.
(viii) Serving on College councils, committees, and working groups as necessary.
(ix) Facilitating portfolio-level enterprise activities, including development of commercial opportunities to develop externally funded projects in conjunction with other Deans, Associate Deans, Directors, Regional Principals, and the Vice-President Academic.
**Education**:
Have a Trades or Technology certification plus a minimum of a graduate degree in a relevant field of study preferred. An equivalent combination of knowledge, experience, and education may be considered.
