**Environmental Technician**

Summary

**Qualifications**
- Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science or environmental studies or related fields; or college diploma in related field
- Post-secondary education that includes skills and training related to Indigenous and western approaches to wildlife management, geography, environmental sciences, environmental studies, planning, or natural resource management
- Field work or environmental research experience
- Project Management experience
- Some knowledge of the methods and techniques of collecting, analyzing and reporting data, especially environmental and/or natural resource data
- General understanding of First Nations environmental issues and some knowledge of land and resource management
- Able to utilize time management skills and be task-oriented
- Experience with GPS and GIS (ArcView/ArcInfo) and cartography would be an asset

**Areas of Responsibility**

**Special Projects (30% of time)**
- Must be willing to implement and lead environmental projects when necessary
- Must be willing to make presentations to the community for community awareness and engagement
- Willingness to sit and participate on external committees

**Field Work (25% of time)**
- Must be willing to conduct field work. This will include but is not limited to water sampling, soil sampling, species inventories, tree planting and environmental remediation.
- Must be willing to work with contractors to undertake field work
- Willingness to undertake training and certification opportunities as they arise

**Environmental Management (25% of time)**
- Gather environmental by-laws, codes and best practices from selected First Nations and from surrounding municipalities
- Gather and collate all information from the First Nation and other sources to begin developing environmental protection laws, strategies, plans and frameworks
- Work on developing an Agricultural Management Plan for the First Nation

**Reporting (10% of time)**
- Must be able to maintain records of field work, activities and report these to the Environment Department, Director, and any other reasonable level of reporting that may be required (e.g. project funding, annual reporting to community)
- Must be able to follow and adhere to lines of authority, especially in relation to spills, environmental emergencies, environmental enforcement, etc.

**Consultation & Accommodation (10% of time)**
- Provide recommendations and assist in the implementation of the community’s consultation protocol for external proponents
- Assist the Consultation Unit in determining environmental impacts of projects by reading technical reports, and providing written comments and recommendations
- Understanding and ability to communicate potential environmental impacts that may result from projects

**Job Demands and Work Environment**
- This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc.
- Extended periods of concentration and attention to detail
- Occasional stressful situations to meet deadlines
- Regular hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm.
- Adjusting schedule to meet the changing demands in areas of responsibilities
- Interact with members, staff, visitors, government agencies/personnel
- Travel may be required
- Overtime as required
