Reporting to the Supervisor, Criminal Registry, the role Juridical Officer Team Lead (JOTL) receives, reviews, processes and prepares required documents and maintains official records for court actions and proceedings; certifies documents; attends court sessions, maintains complete record of court proceedings, and provides support for proceedings. Also, as a senior member of the Criminal Section, the position acts as Team Lead within the Registry, responsible for the training, coaching and guidance of less-experienced Juridical Officers and Juridical Officer trainees.

The JOTL holds statutory appointments as Deputy Clerk, and Administrative Justice of the Peace and is required to perform the duties and discharge the functions of these offices in accordance with the authorities as discussed under the law and judicially-established practices and procedures. This position determines whether legal documents presented by lawyers, government agencies and officials meet the requirements for filing, issuance and entry into the records of the Court, by referring to statutes, regulations, the Rules of Court, and judicial and practice directives. The position’s determinations in relation to documents affect the efficacy of litigation, costs to litigants and the use of judicial and quasi-judicial time. By ensuring that documents are properly and accurately registered, the officer ensures that the procedural rights of litigants are preserved, and the rule of law is maintained. The position liaises with the Judiciary, members of the legal profession, and public on a daily basis, responding to requests for information and assistance. As part of your role as a Juridical Officer Team Lead in the Criminal Section, the officer travels with the circuit court to 24 remote communities throughout Nunavut.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually attained through the completion of a Grade 12 education or equivalent. You must have at least two (2) years of Court registry experience as a juridical officer or in an equivalent position in another jurisdiction. This position requires good oral communication, interpersonal skills, and an ability to prepare written, well-documented reports.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
