$17.00/hourQueensway Carleton Hospital is participating in an initiative set out by the Ministry of Health to hire Hospital Support Aides (HSA) in the response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Reporting to the Care Team or Leader in charge, while working within an interdisciplinary team, the Hospital Support Aide (HSA) provides companionship and non-care related support to patients at Queensway Carleton Hospital. The HSA support could be within various hospital units, including, but not limited to, inpatient wards and outpatient clinics. This is an important role is helping our hospital achieve a safe and secure environment for patients, families, caregivers, and staff alike. All duties are to be performed in accordance with the hospital’s mission, vision, and values, while adhering to any policies, procedures, and regulations.

The program is designed to provide supernumerary Health Human Resources support. Hospital Support Aides do not replace staff or staffing shortages.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Provides companionship to patients while reflecting the preferences of the patient
- Effectively communicates and interacting with patients, family members, visitors, staff, and volunteers in a courteous and professional manner
- Understands how to safely support patients living with disabilities, including, but not limited to mobility issues, visual deficits, etc.
- Provide support for routine tasks that assists with their daily activities
- Supports patients in managing their personal belongings
- Assists the unit with the coordination of virtual family visits i.e., coordinating times and setting up zoom calls, etc. to alleviate the volume of calls to the units by family members
- Listens for monitor alarms i.e., bed alarms, call bells
- Understands and follows all health and safety policies and procedures. Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, other staff members and patients. Promptly reports all actual or potential hazardous situations or injuries to immediate supervisor
- Good understanding of infection control practices
- Conducts duties in accordance with policies and procedures of unit as well as, government regulations, laws, and policies
- Performs other related duties as required
- Demonstrate QCH values: accountability, innovation, respect

**REQUIREMENTS**:

- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of Michener Institute of Education HSA training program
- Training program will be provided upon offer of employment prior to start date
- Must have good judgement and interpersonal skills
- Must be sensitive and empathetic to the needs of the patients
- Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, visitor, and others
- Work requires constant standing and walking, some bending, twisting, and lifting of light supplies
- May be exposed to communicable disease
- Ability/availability to work evenings/weekends

**PREFERRED**:

- Preference will be given to those with special interest/education in health care related field
