**Working for Facilities and Operations**

Facilities and Operations is a diverse portfolio responsible for a range of essential services and work across our five campuses. From managing capital construction and renovations, providing utilities and energy management, to delivering student and campus services, Facilities and Operations works behind the scenes to make the university a great place to study, learn and work.

Facilities & Operations is responsible for over 400 buildings and structures across five campuses comprising almost 1.7 million square meters of real estate — that’s nearly four times the size of West Edmonton Mall.

**Working as a Building Control System Operator Lead Hand**

Engineering & Operations (Building Operations) provides comprehensive 24-hour support maintaining, operating, and monitoring all key institutional infrastructure and building systems. The Building Control System Operator Lead Hand provides technical leadership and supervision to a team of support staff. The Lead Hand assists team members in understanding assigned roles and performance objectives while striving to build a collaborative team through guidance, training, and mentorship.

As the senior technical expert on the team, the Building Control System Operator Lead Hand serves as the point of contact for inquiries and escalations while optimizing program/service and operational performance.

**Duties**
- Helps to address and resolve the concerns of team members. Seeks consensus among diverse viewpoints. and prevents conflict between team members where possible; but resolves it when it does arise.
- Oversee operational shutdown procedures for the University by reviewing and authorizing all planned and emergency shutdowns required to accommodate construction, maintenance, preventative maintenance and emergency repair activities by both internal and external forces.
- Operate all HVAC equipment - change parameters to maintain building environmental conditions through direct digital control (DDC) via computer terminals or from control panels and stand alone electronics accessed and programmed with a laptop computer.
- Identifies development needs for team members. Recommends training and or necessary tools and resources to support successful performance and development.
- Coaches team members on how to achieve performance objectives or how to develop the necessary skills to achieve required results.
- Oversees the quality of team output. Makes corrections when the team is not meeting University/portfolio standards. Provides input into the performance of team members.
- Respond to Unified Communication Center calls as required at any time during off hours to correct problems associated with faulty electronic field Instruments or to provide advice on control strategies and operating techniques.

**Qualifications**
- A strong understanding of the strategic functionality of HVAC Systems, from database to final hardware devices
- HVAC Engineering Technology Diploma combined with a building controls or trades certificate is required
- Consideration will be given to those with certification in the following related trades or technical diplomas:

- Instrumentation and Control Technician Journeyperson:

- Gas Fitter's Journeyperson;
- Electrical Journeyperson.
- Professional accreditation in a related area such as Engineering or Computing Science would be a definite asset but is not required.
