**Acting Supervisor**

Role:
The supervisor will ensure that the worker understands the limits within which they may make decisions and knows when the decisions must be referred to the Executive Director.

The worker understands what information is required by the Executive Director, the manner in which it is to be presented and the time at which it is to be presented.

The Supervisor ensures staff follows program and administrative guidelines and the plan of care/behavior management plan for each child by:

- Directly observing and working with the staff in work situations.
- Reading all the appropriate documentation made by the worker when on duty.
- Being available and accessible to the worker on duty.
- Visually inspecting the full premises to identify any safety concerns.

Providing guidance on the worker’s performance and ensuring that the worker takes corrective action immediately if necessary, or during informal and formal supervisory sessions.

The supervisor will ensure adequate staff coverage in the residence. When required physically covering home shifts, completing all worker responsibilities to ensure sufficient home coverage.

The supervisor should strive to become thoroughly familiar with all the children in the residence, their histories, their special problems, and their progress.

The Supervisor should be able to encourage good staff teamwork in the residence by:

- Balancing staff strengths and weaknesses in the residence and on shift.
- Arranging and facilitating staff meetings.
- Encouraging staff participation in setting and evaluating short
- and long-term individual goals.
- Setting a personal example through working in conjunction with the direct care worker on shift.
- Encouraging open and free communication and mutual guidance among staff.
- Ensuring that all staff, consultants, volunteers, students and all other adults who are involved in some capacity with the home understand and accept each other’s roles and work duties.
- Allocating duties to staff in a way that establishes clear boundaries of authority and responsibility and avoids duplication or gaps.
- Providing the worker with an example of effective job-related behavior through his or her involvement in working directly with children.
- Providing a personal example by sharing duties, providing, and receiving guidance; encouraging open sharing of information, ideas and feelings.
- Observing the workers positive and negative behavior and providing the worker with discreet guidance.
- Responding quickly to assist verbally or physically in situational conflicts between the worker and child when requested or when, in the supervisor’s judgment, the direct care worker is unable to handle the situation.
- Responding and supporting the worker during crisis within the Home, including support of physical restraints.
- Mediate and arbitrate staff conflicts in a way that promotes staff harmony. Unusual occurrences should be reported to the Executive Director.
- Providing directions and correction to workers in the form of performance appraisals, coaching and direct communication.
- Adhere to the Agencies’ disciplinary process to address and correct ongoing worker job performance concerns.

The Supervisor will assign the prime worker for a child in a manner that matches a child’s need with the worker’s competencies.

The Supervisor will partake in the on-call rotation and fulfill the duties of an On-Call supervisor.

**The Supervisor should**:

- Keep the E.D. informed of major problems of the Home and of any activity having a major impact on the program.
- Recommend objectives, policies and programs - both short and long term.
- Carries and functions under general direction or occasional supervision by the E.D.
- Takes own initiative for the execution of established administrative procedures.
- In conjunction with the E.D. plans details of procedures and methods to reach the defined objectives.
- Refers unusual problems to the E.D. Acts with reference to E. D. when problems involve policy change.

**Qualifications**
- Counselling, Case Management, and administrative skills acquired through B.A., B.S.W. Psychology, Sociology or related field, or though College Diploma (S.S.W., C.Y.W., Correctional Worker, or related field).
- Professional experience in working with children.
- Comprehensive knowledge of child welfare programs and legislation.
- Ability to translate recommendations of professional consultants into positive childcare programs on a broad and individual basis.
- Ability to build and maintain confidence in the O & D objectives and it’s relevance to clients, agencies, and public, including sponsoring levels of government.
- Ability to develop and maintain harmonious working relationships amongst staff.
- Ability to speak and write clearly and concisely.
- Ability to use research and evaluate programs.
- Ability to work under general directions or occasional supervision.
- Must possess a valid driver’s licens
