Comfort Care Aide

Reporting directly to the Resident Experience Manager or Nursing Manager, the Comfort Care Aide is responsible for creating an engaging home environment and providing consistent care and services to meet the needs of residents in their home. The Comfort Care Aide works cooperatively and respectfully with residents, coworkers, families, visitors, and volunteers to create a positive and pleasant environment in the home. This includes providing personal care, housekeeping, food preparation, comfort and supporting resident directed activities. The Comfort Care Aide will adhere to organizational policies and procedures, regulations, and protocol as applicable. Comfort Care Aides shall solely represent Canterbury Foundation while on the job. It is a conflict of interest to accept private business for a resident of their family member while employed by Canterbury Foundation.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**
**I. HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELLNESS**
- Committed to knowing, understanding, and reviewing your workplace hazards as identified by your Workplace Hazard Assessment, Joint Workplace Health and Safety Committee and as outlined in Canterbury Foundations Policies and Procedures.
- Participates in making the workplace a safe environment for staff and residents by reporting unsafe conditions, knowing your rights as an employee to refuse unsafe work, and by participating in training, events, and committees.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, footwear and apparel for your role and responsibility for your workday (being mindful of hazards approaching and leaving the workplace).
- Reports unsafe conditions within the living and working environment. Takes required action to decrease the risk of injury immediately and/or notify the Resident Experience Manager/Nursing Manager or RN on duty of the concern.
- Promotes a safe work environment for yourself, residents, family members, co-workers, visitors, and volunteers.
- Know and adhere to fire, emergency, and security policies and procedures.
**II. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
**Personal Care**:
- Treat residents with empathy, dignity, and respect always.
- Request and accommodate resident’s individual choices whenever possible.
- Respect the spiritual and cultural beliefs and practices of the residents.
- Encourage and support residents to maintain or regain independence.
- Respectfully provide explanations to residents. Negotiate with residents when requests cannot be met.
- Encourage residents to take responsibility for all the choices that he or she makes.
- Support relationships that are central to the resident.
- Assisting residents/clients with using mobile communication devices such as a smart phone, tablets to connect with loved ones, and remain connected with the broader community.
- Assist residents to have personal care products/items restocked, laundered, repaired as appropriate.
- Complete procedures that support personal care as required by Canterbury, and care activities for which training has been received such as feeding, safe food handling.
- Provide personal care according to the resident care plan.
- Provide meaningful companionship with residents including participating in games, arts and crafts activities, puzzle completion home making activities, and other appropriate activities requiring focus, social interaction, and meet the needs or interest of the individual.
**Communication**:
- Complies with the organizational policies and procedures, privacy standards, and relevant legislation and regulations.
- Maintain confidentiality of information about the resident and his or her family in accordance Canterbury Foundation’s oath of Confidentiality policy.
- Responds and reports all concerns and complaints from residents, families, and staff to the staff nurse in accordance with the concern resolution process.
- Responds and reports all unusual incidents and critical incidents on the assigned unit to the RN or direct supervisor.
- Participate actively in resident care conferences.
**Food Preparation and Service**:
- Plan meals with the residents and the dietary team. Consistently ensure flexibility in meal plan and provision.
- Encourage resident participation on food preparation, serve and clean up.
- Provides choice to residents in terms of selection, while taking pride in food presentation and customer satisfaction.
- Adheres to food service safety practices for food handling and hand washing procedures.
- Assisting with meals and feeding as directed by the Resident Experience Manager/Nursing Manager.
**Maintenance of the home**:
- Involve the residents in maintaining the home to the best of their abilities.
- Assist the resident to organize the physical environment according to the wishes and needs of the resident.
- Perform minor household maintenance such as changing light bulbs, tightening cupboard knobs etc.
- Report shortages, breakage, and malfunctioning of equipment through the appropriate maintenance systems.
