Dartmouth, Canada New Start Counselling Full time

**New Start is hiring a Counsellor for a term contract as part of our “Repairing Harm: Addressing the waitlist created by the COVID-19 pandemic” project, funded by the Canadian Red Cross.**

**Contract length: 9 months, beginning April 2023**

**Wage: $35/hour, 28 hours/week, includes vacation and sick time**

**About New Start**:
New Start Counselling is a not-for-profit organization which offers therapeutic counselling for individuals who have used abuse or violence within their relationships. We also offer therapeutic support for partners of the clients involved, as well as community workshops and public education. In addition, New Start provides therapeutic programming for male-identifying individuals who have been sexually abused. Located in downtown Dartmouth, New Start Counselling serves a culturally diverse population, often marginalized by poverty and racism, and includes both urban and rural communities.

**About the role**:
**Counsellors **will providetherapeuticcounselling to clients that have used abuse and/or violence against their intimate partner. We also provide counselling to the partners of clients that have been affected by abuse and or violence. Counselling is offered both in person and online. Counsellors work independently for individual sessions (after training), and as a part of a team in the delivery of group sessions and workshops. Counsellors are expected to use collaborative approaches for safety and accountability. Duties also include documentation of case notes, statistical information and report writing. Counsellors will contribute to program development as required and participate in clinical supervision and weekly team meetings. Counsellors will collaborate with community partners and represent the organization on committees as required.

**Qualifications**:

- Master of Social Work, Master of Education in Counselling, or equivalent
- Eligibility for registration with a professional college
- Knowledge and experience of Narrative Therapy and trauma-informed practice
- An understanding of the impact of abuse and violence on individuals and families
- Ability to work collaboratively with professional team
- Ability to effectively manage a client caseload
- Experience working with diverse communities using social determinants of health lens
- Knowledge of community resources
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
