**Job Summary**:
Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Operations, the Commander will provide oversight and leadership to Paramedic Superintendents, frontline paramedics, and support staff to ensure that paramedic operations are provided within legislated requirements.

**Duties & Responsibilities**:

- Oversees and manages day-to-day operations of assigned platoons, superintendents, and paramedics to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of paramedic services to the community.
- Ensures that customer service standards are met by providing oversight regarding responses to inquiries and complaints from members of the public and other stakeholders.
- Liaises with counterparts from the Ministry of Health, Central Ambulance Communication Center, Halton Regional Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police, local municipal fire services and area hospitals regarding operational matters as required.
- Ensures that paramedic staffing is maintained in the most cost-effective manner through the reduction of avoidable overtime.
- Participates in recruitment processes for Operations Superintendents/Platoon Leaders/Paramedics.
- Monitors operational performance on assigned shifts, including the deployment of paramedic resources by the Central Ambulance Communications Center, response time performance, the completion of operational reports by paramedics and superintendents, and compliance with divisional, departmental and corporate policies as well as all regulatory requirements.
- Coordinates debriefing sessions, referral to EAP/peer support/ disability management/consulting psychologist for staff impacted by a critical event.
- Assumes a leadership role at large-scale/multi-casualty incidents as required.
- Participates in the design and delivery, including change management principles, of programs aimed at improving efficiencies within the Division.
- Participates in preparation of operational budget.

**Skills & Qualifications**:
**Essential**
- Current Ontario certification as an Advanced Care or Primary Care Paramedic.
- Must be qualified to work as a paramedic, hold current certification under an Ontario base hospital, and meet all requirements of the Ambulance Act of Ontario.
- Undergraduate Degree in Health Sciences, Business, or related field.
- Knowledge of the Ambulance Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation as it relates to the position.
- Demonstrated leadership skills acquired through experience supervising staff or leading work teams, preferably in a unionized environment.
- Strong organization and negotiation skills.
- F class driver’s license.
- Commitment to continuous improvement and quality customer service.
- Ability to manage multiple and changing demands and priorities in high-pressure situations.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.

**Preferred**
- IMS 200 or greater.

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

**Working Conditions**:

- 12-hour shifts on a rotational basis, which includes working every other weekend and holidays.
- May be required to assist in Operations when staffing is at critical levels.
