Position Overview:
The Gardener position assists with maintenance of floral displays and landscaped areas including cultivation, planting, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, and identifying plant health challenges with support from the horticulturalist team. This position also provides field support for the design, and implementation of newly landscaped areas in the City of Kitchener. Seasonal winter duties may include tasks such as snow plowing, salting, shoveling, and the maintenance and inspections of ice rinks and toboggan hills.
- Responsibilities:
- Cultivates areas for planting including transplanting bulbs and plants in flowerbeds and planters.
- Planting and maintaining flowerbeds including removing bulbs, litter, and unwanted vegetation; adding, amending, and leveling soil. Also including activities such as watering, fertilizing, and weeding; ensuring that locations aesthetics are maintained to corporate standard.
- Performing pruning responsibilities of plants that require maintenance.
- Participates in preparing seasonal planters including design, planting & maintenance. Also including the installation and removal of seasonal planters.
- Operates various pieces of vehicles and equipment (e.g. tractors, loaders, small power equipment, utility vehicles, etc.) as required.
- Assists Horticulturalist in day-to-day operations as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

**Requirements**:
- Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
- Completed Courses in Horticulture from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- Valid MTO G class driver's license in good standing and ability to obtain DZ Class Driver’s License within 6 months.
- Related experience within field of Commercial Horticulture (or equivalent as determined by the Corporation).
- Experience in proper care and operation of commercial horticulture related equipment.
- Knowledge and experience in methods of techniques of commercial horticulture, relating to general operations, pruning, fertilizing, cultivation, layout and planting, plant design.
- Ability to work varying shifts, weekends, overtime, and winter call outs as required.
- Participation in Winter Job Pool and complete required winter tasks.
- Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
