Position Summary

The Career Development Centre exists as a unit within the Teaching & Learning portfolio that engages students and alumni in their career development as an integral part of the Laurier experience. This encompasses delivery of comprehensive programs and services that support experiential learning, career decision making, employment preparation, facilitation of connections with the employer community, and pursuit of further education opportunities. Specific programs and services include individual consultation and workshops on career planning, resumé writing, job search strategies, interview skills and further education; a Career Resource Centre; comprehensive employment services for full-time, summer and part-time opportunities for students and alumni; volunteerism; career-integrated learning in conjunction with campus partners; co-curricular experiential learning opportunities; online resources; numerous events such as career panels, employment recruiting sessions, Job Fairs, a Further Education Fair; and the Laurier Experience Record.

The Employment Consultant will report to the Associate Director, Career Development & External Relations. This role is accountable for the provision of employment preparation programs and services for Laurier undergraduate and graduate students, alumni and staff. The Employment Consultant will collaborate with the Career Consulting Team to ensure program alignment.

Specific to this role is the delivery of employment preparation programs and services through individual appointments and workshops (in-person or online)) to address the unique needs of undergraduate and graduate students and alumni; the development of print, webinar, social media and resources; and the establishment and maintenance of relationships with internal and external stakeholders and staff. Services are offered at Laurier Brantford.

Accountabilities

Employment Consulting

Develops strong, supportive advising relationships that are adaptable to people from all identities and experiences

Guides students and alumni in accessing and using labour market and other sources of information to build their understanding of the world of work

Assists students and alumni in articulating their interests, skills and employment goals, and guides students and alumni in developing a plan of action to meet their employment objectives

Adopts a best practice approach to employment advising that reflects current trends in employer hiring practices, industry/professional guidelines and current labour market conditions

Coaches students and alumni on the hidden job market, utilization of social media such as LinkedIn and networking techniques to identify job opportunities

Reviews resumés and provides advice on resumé structure and matching existing skills/competencies to job posting qualifications and duties

Conducts mock interviews and provides interview coaching

Assists students and alumni in identifying appropriate references

Researches and provides students and alumni with relevant job search resources (electronic and print) related to their field(s) of interest

Instructs students on the development of networking skills (including professional etiquette) and informational interviewing techniques and strategies

Assesses student and alumni needs regarding career decision-making a
