**Key Responsibilities**:
The Agriculture Technician, Beef Operations has a crucial role in supporting the Farm Manager and Coordinator, Farm Operations in the management of the Student Managed Farm beef herds. The incumbent will manage the purebred, commercial and extensive grazing herds; oversee day-to-day operations of the herds; maintain farm facilities; and support hands-on student training to ensure efficient, well-managed, and sustainable farm practices. This includes, but is not limited to:

- Track the herd inventory and maintain accurate records
- Daily checks and monitoring of all animals - ensuring feed, water, bedding and other necessities are properly managed and provided
- Herd Health and well-being, monitoring and management
- Assist in the development of the breeding programs, bull management and movement of the herds
- Oversee the calving of the herds and ensure proper care and assistance to the cows and manage the health of all newborn calves
- Pasture management, rotation, conditions, optimization, water availability and sustainable use and ecosystem enhancement
- Adhere to safety and industry standards and regulations
- Attend the SMF beef unit’s meetings - general, weekly and specific topic
- Collaborate with and provide advice and guidance to SMF Faculty Advisors and student on all aspects of beef herd management, planning and activities
- Supervise students during regular labs, calving and tasks related to the beef herds
- Repair and maintenance of farm equipment including oil changes and greasing, thawing and repairing stock waterers, building and repairing corrals and other penning, maintaining and repairing feed systems
- Driver and safety training of students (tractor and written training)
- To be an active part of the team in assisting other agriculture technicians, farm staff and faculty in other farm related duties that may arise relating to the crops, feed, dairy and equine units

**Job Requirements**:

- Post-secondary two-year diploma in agriculture related education
- 3-5 years of appropriate experience working with beef cattle and calving
- 2 years’ experience with farm equipment operation, specifically feed tractor and mixer wagon experience
- Experience operating farm equipment experience
- Experience with artificial insemination in beef cattle would be an asset
- Manual labour is required
- On call, shift work, weekend and/or early or late hours may be required
- Valid drivers' license

**Additional Information**:
This is a Full-time Permanent AUPE appointment at the Vermilion campus commencing as soon as possible. The current salary range is $50,198 - $63,259 per annum and includes a generous benefit package and pension plan.
